In what was a very physical basketball game, the Roane State Raiderettes held off a late rally by the Cleveland State Lady Cougars to take a 70-62 victory on Breast Cancer Awareness night.
With the victory, Roane State moved into second place in the TJCCAA standings with a 13-3 conference mark and an overall record of 15-6. The Raiderettes are currently one game behind Walters State (19-4, 14-2) in the conference and the two teams will meet Saturday in Harriman at 5 p.m.
The Raiderettes and Lady Senators are two of four teams that are battling it out for the conference’s top spot as Cleveland State and Chattanooga State are currently tied for third in the standings with a conference mark of 12-3.
Roane State ends their regular season on Wednesday, Jan. 23 against Chattanooga State.
Cleveland State started Saturday’s game on a 14-6 run before Roane State tied the game on an 11-3 tilt and managed to take a 31-30 halftime lead.
Roane State used a 15-6 stretch to take a 10-point lead and the Raiderettes enjoyed an eight-point lead when with 3:03 left in the game, but that’s when everything hit the fan as both teams engaged in a brief bench-clearing brawl that saw three Cleveland State players ejected and one Roane State player ejected.
Cleveland State got within four points, but Roane State pulled away late for the 70-62 win.
Cleveland State had a 38-35 edge on the boards and a 20-14 tilt in team steals plus a 10-7 three-point shooting advantage, but Roane State held the Lady Cougars to 28.8 percent shooting and that was the key to victory.
The Raiderettes were led by Tasha Phillips (16 points, 7 boards), Jacquelyn Hickson (15 points, 5 boards), Jill Herman (14 points, 6 boards) and Kelli Reed (12 points, 10 boards).
Cleveland State was led by Mariah Lawrence (19 points, 5 three-pointers) and Michelle Davis (10 points, 6 boards).

The Roane State Raiders had to fight off the Cleveland State Cougars but they managed to pick up a hard fought 83-76 win Saturday night.
With the victory, Roane State improves to 15-8 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
Roane State had a 14-2 stretch that got them an early 41-31 lead, but the Cougars scored the last six points of the half to make the score 41-37 at intermission.
Roane State had to hang on for dear life, but free throws down the stretch helped give them an 83-76 win.
Roane State had a 45-36 edge on the boards, but the Cougars eked out a 10-9 edge on the boards and a 5-1 three-point shooting advantage.
The Raiders were led by Quint Clinkscales (20 points, 9 boards), Jacob Pettway (14 points, 6 boards), Yavario Smith (13 points, 5 boards), Antonio Kalpic (12 points) and Kinard Gadsen-Gilliard (10 points, 7 assists).
Jerrod Allen (10 boards), Jon Maybank (9 assists) and Brad Reid (5 boards) also played well in the win.
Cleveland State was led in defeat by Keith Johnson (23 points, 5 steals), Philip Jenkins (17 points, 5 boards, 5 assists) and Terrell Parks (13 points).
