Roane State women open with home win

For the Roane State Raiderettes, Saturday afternoon’s game against the visiting Spartanburg Methodist College Lady Pioneers proved that the old adage “There’s no place like home” rings very true as the Raiderettes raided the Lady Pioneers for a hard-fought 67-61 season opening victory.

In the first half, both teams were engaged in a proverbial tug-of-war but the Raiderettes jumped out to a 34-27 first half lead on the strength of a 12-3 run during one stretch of the opening half.

In the second half, the Raiderettes hit a three-pointer to jump start the second half, but the Lady Pioneers battled back to tie the game on a 10-0 run.

Roane State was not to be denied on this afternoon, using an 11-3 tilt to propel them to an eventual 67-61 victory.

The Raiderettes were led by the scoring tandem of Taylor Oliver and Tikedra Jones. Oliver had 20 points, five boards, three assists and four steals while Jones had 19 points with nine rebounds and a pair of assists.

Also having big scoring days for the Raiderettes were Casha Foster with nine points, six assists, and four steals along with Whitney Jordan with seven points, two rebounds, three as-sists and two steals.

Spartanburg Methodist College was led in scoring by Markesha Smith with 19 points, eight boards, four assists and three steals along with Erica Caldwell with 14 points, three re-bounds and a couple of assists.

The Raiderettes had a 13-10 turnover advantage while Spartanburg Methodist had a 29-27 edge on the boards.

The Raiderettes were also in action Monday when they traveled to Dayton to take on Bryan College.

The Raiderettes open TJCCAA Conference play this Friday and Saturday. Friday Roane State will be in Memphis to take on Southwest and Saturday they will play at Dyersburg State.
