Roberts awarded CCW scholarship

The Council of Catholic Women at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harriman, recently presented a $1,000 scholarchip to Cynthia Roberts.

Roberts, a 2014 Roane County High School graduate, finished with a 3.85 grade-point average.

She was president of both the Key Club and Future Business Leaders of America.

She was also secretary of both DECA and the Beta Club, and she served as a woodwind section leader in the Roane County High School Band.

Daughter of Blessed Sacrament parishioners Susan and Tom Roberts of Kingston, Roberts volunteered for Hands of Mercy, Love Kitchen, food banks, angel trees, walkathons, nursing home visits and Christmas baskets for the needy.

She was admitted to the East Tennessee State Band and Orchestra Association Honor Bands for the past five years.

Roberts was chosen to represent her area as a National American Miss, becoming a People-to-People Student Ambassador.

She attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine and was a Tennessee Scholar. Roberts also placed second in the annual Rotary Club speech contest.

She swam competitively with the Kingston Swim Team for 12 years and has served as assistant coach.

Roberts studies piano and flute and has auditioned and been accepted at the University of Tennessee School of Music.

She has been at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where she served as secretary of the Catholic Youth Organization and helped create Teen Help Cards for at-risk teens.

Roberts also participated in the Columbus Homes Child Services Walkathon, World Youth Day, Swimming for Seton, Sleepless in Gatlinburg, and St. Patrick’s Day skits.

She was given the Discipleship Award from the Diocese of Knoxville for being a leader and she represented the Diocese on the national level by attending the National Catholic Youth Conference in 2011 and 2013.

A two-week mission trip to Marsella, Colombia, resulted in life-changing experiences in which Roberts shared her faith and God’s love with numerous people.

She plans to major in sports medicine with a minor in applied music.
