The parks and recreation director position at Rockwood will be advertised after all.
Mayor James Watts had earlier said he would appoint a person to the position and had a few people he wanted to talk to.
The Rockwood City Council agenda this month, however, included a line item for a resolution to approve advertising the position and a job description.
It also included the naming of a board to review applications and make recommendations to the full council.
“We are several employees short right now,” council member Jason Jolly said. “I think if we go out and start hiring a bunch of help without our director, we might miss out.”
Jolly wants someone who will focus on aspects of recreation in addition to baseball and basketball.
“There is a lot more recreation besides those two things,” Jolly said. “It is important we can get a good person that can do all these things.”
Council member Bill Thompson said he would like to see someone hired by Jan 1.
Vice Mayor Peggy Evans suggested restructuring the park and recreation department to include the golf department, a change Thompson had proposed when the issue came up at the finance committee.
Jolly, however, said he thinks the process would take too long, and the need for someone now is too great to wait.
The list of those who will be reviewing applicants includes Jolly, who is council representative on parks and recreation, Watts and parks and recreation board members Mark Smith and Russ Cisson.
“The park and recreation folks do a great job,” Watts said. “I felt it was very important for park and recreation to have a huge part in the selection of applicants.”
Rockwood City Recorder Becky Ruppe has also finished preparing the position’s job description, which includes responsibilities, required knowledge and qualifications.
