Rockwood's hopes of winning the 2009 TSSAA Class AA state title came to an end Friday night as John Webb's squad were knocked off in Chattanooga by Boyd-Buchanan, 42-0, in the semifinal round of the Class AA playoffs.
"We knew coming in here that Boyd-Buchanan had a really good football team and we'd have to play well if we wanted to win," Tiger head coach John Webb said following the loss. "We made a lot of mistakes early; mistakes you can't make against a team as good as them and expect to win."
Webb, however, says Friday's disappointing loss will not overshadow what was a phenomenal season in Rockwood. A season that included 11 wins, a Roane County Championship, and thrilling back-to-back playoff victories at Oneida and Hampton.
"What these guys did this season is amazing," Webb said. "I don't think anybody expected us to be here, but these guys kept fighting all year. I know this game will hurt for a few days, but they'll soon be able to look back and see what all they've accomplished. I'm really proud of this team."
Friday's game was decided early on as Boyd-Buchanan scored three touchdowns in the first 5:36 of play and eventually led 42-0 at halftime.
Boyd-Buchanan opened the contest with a 62-yard pass from QB Andrew Crowe to WR Taylor Shull and the Bucs scored four plays later when talented RB Ben Beasley scored on a fourth down run from the one to make the score 7-0 with 9:51 left in the opening period.
After a Tiger three-and-out, Boyd-Buchanan put together a four-play, 58-yard scoring drive capped by a Beasley 14-yard run that made the score 14-0 with 6:33 left in the first quarter.
Rockwood was staggered at this point, but the Tigers were all but knocked out on the ensuing kickoff as Boyd-Buchanan senior Matthew Crowe scooped up a Tiger fumble and raced 21 yards on the return to make the score 21-0 with 6:24 left in the opening period.
The scoring pace slowed after the first 5:36, but Rockwood never got into the contest.
The Tigers picked up just one first down and 26 total yards of offense in the first half while Boyd-Buchanan ended the first half with 291 yards of total offense and a commanding 42-0 lead at intermission.
Beasley made the score 28-0 with 1:55 left in the first period when he scored from one yard out.
Crowe and Shull hooked up from 15 yards out with 6:35 left in the second quarter to make the score 35-0 then Buc RB Chase Reed capped a six-play, 26-yard drive with a five-yard run at the 4:05 mark of the second period to make the score 42-0.
The second half was over in a hurry as the third and fourth quarters were played under TSSAA's mercy rule with the clock running non stop.
Rockwood ended the evening with 94 yards of total offense on 41 plays.
Senior FB Jeff Inman led the Tiger attack with 40 yards on 14 carries while fellow senior Davey Templeton added 31 yards on nine attempts.
Boyd-Buchanan (11-1) ended the game with 320 yards of offense on 44 plays.
Beasley led the ground attack with 85 yards and three TDs on eight carries while Crowe completed six of nine passes for 121 yards and one score.
