The PLS ’99 15-Under soccer team recently won the Tennessee State Soccer Association Division 3 State Championship by winning three games in Goodlettsville.
PLS is a team made up of players from Rockwood, Halls, Oak Ridge and Knoxville.
The team played their first game against Camp Forest from outside Tullahoma and picked up a 2-1 victory. PLS also got eight of a possible 10 point for the win.
Rockwood’s Lexie Hill provided all of the offense as she scored on a first half penalty kick and then she added a second half goal that proved to be the game-winner.
In its second game, PLS ’99 faced a must-win scenario against FC Alliance North ’99 to advance to the title game. PLS got the win with an exciting 3-2 victory in a contest that wasn’t decided until the final seconds.
The game was a seesaw affair with FCA scoring first only to see Hill and Kiley Bowman answering for PLS to give them a 2-1 lead at the half.
FCA, however, tied the score at 2-2 early in the second half and would need only a tie to reach the title game. FCA tried to milk the clock down the stretch, but with 30 seconds remaining, Mikayla Worthington struck the ball on a corner kick into the FCA goal area where it took a weird bounce, possibly touched by a PLS player and sent the ball into the back of the net for a 3-2 win as the center referee blew the whistle.
The championship game was even more exciting as PLS beat the Stones River Lady Rapids in a shootout.
PLS fell behind early, 1-0, but they got that goal back when Rockwood’s Camryn Evans was taken down inside the box, which led to a successful penalty kick from Lexie Hill that tied the score at 1-1.
Stones River regained the lead at 2-1 only to see Elizabeth Bradshaw knock home a goal for PLS to tie the game at 2-2.
Through the final 10 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtime periods, goalkeeper Zoie Hill (Rockwood), made some great one-on-one stops to get the team to penalty kick shootout.
In the shootout, Zoie Hill saved three shots from the Lady Rapids then Nancy Pont Briant scored and Lexie Hill had the game-winner to give PLS ’99 the state title.
Team members Kaley Legg and Darcy Ferrell are also from Rockwood.
