Rockwood to host middle school jamboree

Fans of middle school football can see a lot of area teams on Saturday as the 2014 Rockwood Middle School Football Jamboree will be held at Civitan Field.

A total of ten schools will be represented at the event that starts at noon and will run until approximately 7 p.m.

The jamboree’s format will see each team playing two 15-minute quarters with a running clock. After two quarters are completed, the teams will play two more quarters  with their junior varsity players.

Three schools from Roane County will be playing on Saturday.

Cherokee will be the first to hit the field as the Jackets will take on Rhea Middle at noon. 

Oliver Springs will be the second team from Roane County to take the field as the Bobcats will take on Norris at approximately 2:40 p.m.

The final team from Roane Count to hit the field will be Rockwood. The Tigers are set to take on Christian Academy of Knoxville at 5:20 p.m.

In match-ups involving non Roane County teams, Oneida plays Spring City at 1:20 p.m. and Coalfield takes on Wartburg at 4 p.m.

Admission to the jamboree is $5.

The jamboree is the final tune-up a lot of teams before the regular season opens on Thursday, Aug. 14.

Three Roane County teams will open the season on that day as Rockwood visits Rhea Middle, Oliver Springs heads to Coalfield, and Harriman travels to Wartburg.

Cherokee and Midway will open their season the following week.

For the first time in years, all five Roane County schools will be playing in the same division this season. The five will be joined by Wartburg and Spring City to make up the Clinch Valley Conference.

At the end of the season, the top two teams in the standings will play for the Clinch Valley Conference championship.

 

High School Scrimmages

 

Three of Roane County’s five high school teams will be in action Friday night in preseason scrimmages.

Two teams will be at home as Midway entertains Wartburg, and Oliver Springs takes on Cumberland County and Sweetwater in a three-way scrimmage.

All three scrimmages begin at 6 p.m.

Kingston hits the road as Brian Pankey’s squad travels to Jamestown to take on York Institute at 7 p.m..

Rockwood is set to take on Sunbright at 7 p.m. this evening.
