The city of Rockwood recently paid a portion of what is still owed in TVA funds to the Rockwood Water, Sewer and Natural Gas Department.
“It is the first time we’ve been able to make a payment,” said Rockwood City Recorder Becky Ruppe of the $18,500 payment.
The remaining $100,000 debt is what the city owes for TVA funds designated for Rockwood Water, Sewer and Natural
Gas projects by the Roane County Eco-
nomic Development Board after the Dec. 22, 2008, ash spill at Kingston Fossil Plant.
The city, not the utility, received the funds. But city officials were unable to timely reimburse the utilities when invoices for the various projects came in.
Ruppe is hopeful that February, the last chance for people to pay their property taxes on time, will allow the city to pay off even more of that obligation.
“We done really well in October,” Ruppe added.
The city, she said received more than $20,000 from Victorian Square, which owes property taxes.
She hopes so many people will be coming in this month that they’ll need helping juggling them.
“Hopefully we have to have some-
body (out here) directing traffic,” Ruppe said.
