Medic Regional Blood Center offices will be closed on Labor Day, Sept. 6.
That means a day of no blood collections for the community.
“Please visit a blood drive before the holiday weekend so we can increase our inventory to ensure everyone’s safety over the long weekend,” said Christi Fightmaster of Medic public relations.
One such blood drive will be on Sept. 3 in Kingston Community Center at 201 Patton Ferry Road.
The blood drive will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to staff reports, Medic must collect 350 pints of blood each day of the week in order to adequately supply the blood needs of the community.
Medic’s main donor center at 1601 Ailor Ave., Knoxville, is open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Farragut center, at 11000 Kingston Pike, is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.
All donors will receive Medic’s Blood Coverage, which exempts donors and their IRS dependent from paying blood-collection and blood-processing fees at any U.S. hospital if a transfusion is needed, excluding pre-existing illness. Each additional donation adds another year’s credit toward this donor benefit.
Donors will also receive  a T-shirt and a coupon for a free chicken sandwich.
Donors must be 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more. With parental consent, 16-year-olds weighing 120 pounds or more may donate blood. Consent forms can be found at any blood drive or online at www.medicblood.org.
Medic is the sole provider of blood and blood products for 21 counties and 27 area hospitals.
