As of Oct. 9, TBI Agent Brad Nealon is now leading the investigation of the Sept. 5th shooting at Edna Mae’s Bar and Grill.
It was reported earlier that TBI had entered the investigation to assist the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office but District Attorney General Russell Johnson said last week that the TBI is now leading the investigation.
Johnson said that the decision came during a meeting with the TBI supervisor out of Cookeville to go over cases involving the Ninth District’s two agents Brad Nealon and Jason Legg.
“It’s really not that big of a deal or change but instead of an assist it will now be a full investigation (by TBI),” Johnson said.
Johnson said he still hopes the investigation will be completed before January and can be presented to the Grand Jury at that time.
He said one of the difficulties officers had encountered in their investigation was the refusal of the victim Les Barnaby to be interviewed.
Johnson said an attorney representing Barnaby has contacted his office and Barnaby will be interviewed soon by TBI Agent Brad Nealon.
“According to witness statements, Barnaby stepped off the porch of the bar and approached the 2009 Mustang convertible that (Doyle) Garrett was driving. In his statement, Garrett, a former THP officer, states that he shot Barnaby after Barnaby began hitting Garrett on the head with a beer bottle,” Johnson said earlier.
