Paul Kamikawa's Rockwood Tigers punched their ticket to the District 3-A championship game on Wednesday by knocking off Berean Christian, 58-44, Monday night in the semifinals at Greenback.
Rockwood hit only three three-pointers Monday night, but all three came at the end of the first quarter and were part of a late run that broke open a back-and-forth game to give the Tigers a 17-12 at the end of one period of play.
A total of six Tigers scored in the first period led by four points from Harold Huffman while Jared Breazeale, Cleveland Davidson and Riley Clem all buried treys.
Balance was again the name of the game for Rockwood in the second period as five Tigers scored in taking a 30-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Rockwood held a comfortable lead throughout the second half, but they were never able to completely shake the Eagles until late in the game.
The third period would see the Tigers outscore the Eagles 12-7 to take a 42-29 lead into the final period of play.
Berean did make things interesting in the final period. The Eagles opened the period on a 12-6 run to pull with 48-41, but Berean would get no closer as Rockwood responded with a 10-1 run to put the game away.
Brendan Kirkland led Rockwood on the night with 16 points and eight rebounds while Breazeale (9 points, 6 rebounds), Harold Huffman (9 points, 4 rebounds) and Davidson (7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) also put up solid numbers in the victory.
The victory sets up a showdown at 8 p.m. on Wednesday with Harriman. Monday's victory also secures the Tigers with a home game on Friday in the first round of the Region 2-A Tournament.
Rockwood (58) Davidson 7, Clem 4, Huffman 9, Kirkland 16, Webster 6, Boles 5, Breazeale 9, Golliher 2.
