The 2001 season didn’t get off to a great start Friday night for the Rockwood Tigers as John Webb’s squad dropped a 21-0 decision at Sequoyah.

Sequoyah got off to a quick start as the Chiefs took the opening kickoff and drove 79 yards in six plays with Trey Dyer scoring on a 45-yard run to give Sequoyah a 7-0 lead with 9:10 left in the first quarter.

Sequoyah threatened to add to their lead on their second drive as they drove all the way to the Tiger 35 before Rockwood’s Matt Cofer picked off a pass at the 22 yard line to stop the drive.

While Sequoyah’s offense found some success in the opening period, Rockwood struggled as the Tigers picked up just one first down and 23 total yards in the opening period.

The second period was dominated by both defenses. Sequoyah picked up just three first downs and 21 yards in the quarter while Rockwood picked up 45 yards and two first downs.

The second half opened with both the Tigers and Chiefs turning over the ball.

Rockwood opened the third period on offense, but fumbled the ball away on their third snap from scrimmage. Sequoyah, however, couldn’t capitalize as they fumbled the ball away at the Tigers 23.

The biggest play of the game occurred three plays later as a Chief DB appeared to make contact with Rockwood’s Brendan Kirkland before the ball arrived, but no fag was thrown as the ball sailed into the air and into the arms of a Sequoyah linebacker. The subsequent 32-yard return for a touchdown gave the Chiefs a 14-0 lead with 7:06 left in the third period.

Sequoyah put the game on their next drive as they drove 51 yards in 10 plays to take a 21-0 lead with 19 seconds left in the third period.

The Tigers had the ball three times in the final period and all three occasions, Rockwood had the ball inside the Chief 20 yard line, but they would not score.

Rockwood’s first drive lasted 10 plays and covered 48 yards before the Tigers turned the ball over on downs at the Chief 11. Two pass covering 32 yards from QB Matt Cofer highlighted the drive.

Rockwood got the ball back two plays later at the Sequoyah 10 after a fumble, but the Tigers couldn’t cross the goal line as they turned the ball over on downs at the five.

Rockwood’s final drive of the night started on their own 42 and reached the Chief 17 after a 41-yard pass from Cofer to Tyler Skidmore, but the drive ended with an interception in the end zone.

Rockwood tallied 177 yards of offense on the night with 84 yards coming on the ground and 93 through the air.

Rockwood (0-1) will host South Greene (1-0) Friday night at Civitan Field.
