The Rockwood Tigers picked up a big District 3-A victory Tuesday night as Paul Kamikawa’s squad travelled to Greenback and knocked off the Cherokees, 56-47.

The news wasn’t as good for the Lady Tigers, however, as Greenback picked up a 44-43 victory.

Tuesday’s results also leave the District 3-A standings in a bit of a mess.

The Lady Tigers are currently second in the standings with one game left on their schedule. A victory over Midway Friday would secure the Lady Tigers at least a second place tie for Rockwood in the final district standings.

Rockwood’s boys are currently tied for second place in the district standings with Tellico Plains. The Tigers host Midway Friday while the Bears travel to district champion Harriman.

Girls Game

One more basket was all Rockwood needed to secure the victory, but those two points were nowhere to be found as Greenback improved to 6-4 in district play with the 44-43 victory.

Things looked good for Rockwood early on as the Lady Tigers used five points from Reanna Henderson in building a 12-6 lead after eight minutes of play.

The second quarter, however, belonged to Greenback as the Lady Cherokees outscored the Lady Tigers 15-7 in the frame to take a 21-19 lead at halftime.

Jade Napier scored five of Rockwood’s points in the second quarter.

Rockwood’s offense picked up again in the third quarter as the Lady Tigers won the period 13-10 to take a 32-31 lead with eight minutes left to play.

Shaley Grant led five Lady Tigers in scoring in the period with four points.

Rockwood, however, couldn’t close the deal in the final period as Greenback rallied in the final frame for the one-point victory.

Grant led Rockwood on the night with 12 points while Napier added 11.

Greenback’s Ashley Brown led all scorers with 19 points.

Rockwood (43) Henderson 7, Monroe 2, Napier 11, Breazeale 4, Gunter 7, Grant 12.

Boys Game

Big second and fourth quarters were the keys to the Tigers picking up a 56-47 victory on Tuesday.

The Tigers scored just eight points in the first quarter, but 16 in the second as they started to build momentum heading into halftime.

Cleveland Davidson scored 13 points in the first half for Rockwood.

Rockwood struggled again in the third quarter with only eight points, but three-point shooting and free throw shooting would carry the Tigers down the stretch.

Jared Breazeale hit Rockwood’s only two three-pointers of the game in the fourth quarter then the Tigers made 12 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Davidson hit eight of those free throws in the final quarter and finished the evening with 23 points. Breazeale was next in line with 12 points.

Rockwood (56) Davidson 23, Clem 4, Golliher 2, Webster 5, Breazeale 12, Almeida 2, Kirkland 8.
