Eight unearned runs spelled the letters “D-O-O-M” for the Oliver Springs Bobcats baseball squad in their 2011 season opener, as they fell to the Rockwood Tigers 15-5 Monday evening.
Rockwood started off with a loud, resounding bang in the form of a two-run Tavin Napier home run to take an early 2-0 lead.
After Oliver Springs left the bases loaded in the top of the second, Collin Smith hit a two-run triple, Lucas Jolly had an RBI single, and Hayden Freels stole home to make the score 6-0.
Oliver Springs got within 6-4 in the top of the third inning on two walk-in RBIs, a run coming off of a hit batter, and a Tiger error.
Rockwood pulled out to an 8-4 lead with an RBI single by Freels and an error in the bottom of the frame.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the lead grew to 12-4 on two Bobcat errors, a sacrifice RBI, and a base runner stealing home.
In the top of the fifth, Logan Crisp hit an RBI single for the Bobcats, but the Tigers responded back with a sacrifice RBI and two base runners stealing home to make the final score 15-5.
Rockwood was led at the plate by Collin Smith (2-2, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBIs, 2 walks), Tavin Napier (2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 1 walk), Hayden Freels (2-2, 1 2B, 2 RBIs) and Isaac Allen (2-2, 1 RBI).
Jared Breazeale (2 2/3 innings, 3 Ks, 4 walks, 1 hit, 4 runs) was the winning pitcher for the Tigers.
Oliver Springs was led at the plate by Logan Crisp (2-4, 1 RBI).
Getting tallied with the loss for the Bobcats was Cary Gann (2 innings, 3 Ks, 2 walks, 6 runs).
The two teams will complete their season series Thursday when the Tigers travel to Oliver Springs.
The Bobcats will also be at home on Friday when they host Scott.
