Tigers split with Tellico Plains

-A A +A

Fans that watched Saturday’s games between the Tellico Plains Bears and Rockwood Tigers were treated to a pair of nail-biters.

The first game of the evening would see the Lady Tigers hand the Lady Bears their first District 3-A loss in two years as Rockwood won in overtime, 42-41.

The second game of the evening didn’t go into overtime, but it was just as exciting as Tellico Plains picked up a 45-43 victory over the Tigers.

Girls Game

The Lady Tigers felt they let Tellico Plains off the hook earlier this month at Rockwood, and Amy Breazeale’s squad avenged that loss Saturday night thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play from Reanna Henderson with .8 seconds left to play.

Saturday’s game was close throughout as Rockwood led 7-6 after eight minutes of play then the Lady Bears won the second period by one point to tie the game at halftime, 14-14.

The scoring pace picked up a bit in the third period as Henderson and Kiley Gunter each buried three-pointers in the frame to help Rockwood take a 26-22 lead into the final period of play.

Rockwood couldn’t hold that lead down the stretch, however, as Tellico Plains’ Sarah McKinnon caught fire. McKinnon scored 13 points in the final period as the teams headed to overtime tied at 37.

The Lady Bears took a 41-39 lead in overtime and that lead seemed safe until Henderson hit a jumper with .8 seconds left to tie the game. Henderson was fouled on the play and she hit the ensuing free throw to give the Lady Tigers the victory.

Henderson (15 points) and Breazeale (13 points) led Rockwood on the evening while McKinnon scored a game-high 27 points to lead the way for Tellico Plains.

Rockwood (42) Henderson 15, Bear 2, Napier 2, Breazeale 13, Gunter 7, Grant 3.

Boys Game

Rockwood played well for three quarters Saturday night, but a slow start proved too much to overcome as Tellico Plains picked up a 45-43 victory in a key District 3-A game for both teams.

Tellico Plains’ Preston Russell was the story of the game in the first quarter as he buried a pair of three-pointers and scored 12 total points in leading the Bears to a 19-10 lead after eight minutes of play.

The Tigers held Russell to five points in the second period, but that was also the number of points scored by the Tigers in the frame as Tellico Plains took a 26-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Cleveland Davidson provided most of Rockwood’s offense in the first half as he buried two three-pointers and scored eight points.

Davidson came out of the locker room red-hot in the third period. Davidson buried two three-pointers and scored 14 points in the frame as Rockwood pulled even at 37 heading into the final period of play.

Rockwood, however, could not complete the comeback as Tellico Plains held on down the stretch for the 45-43 victory.

Davidson had a huge night for the Tigers in the loss as he buried four three-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points.

Russell led Tellico Plains with 24 points.

 Rockwood (43) Davidson 25, Clem 2, Huffman 6, Webster 2, Breazeale 4, Kirkland 4.
