Tigers teams split games in Eble tourney

After winning their season openers last week, the Rockwood Middle School Tigers and Lady Tigers played their second game of the season last week with differing results in the second round of the 2013 Hollis Eble Tournament at Oakdale.

In boys action, the Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season following a hard fought 45-39 victory over the host Eagles. The Lady Tigers weren’t as fortunate as York downed the Lady Tigers, 37-28.

Both teams played again Tuesday in the final day of the tourney.

Boys Game

Jeff Allen’s squad took the lead early and never let it go in picking up a six-point victory at Oakdale.

The Tigers dominated the glass early in taking a 14-8 lead after eight minutes of play.

Colby Robbins was the big gun for Rockwood in the first period, coming off the bench to score six points while Dawson Smith scored four points to lead the way for Oakdale.

The second period was full of runs.

Oakdale opened the quarter with a 7-2 run to pull within 16-15, but Rockwood answered with seven straight points to take a 23-15 late in the half. The half ended with one last Oakdale run to make the score 23-19 at intermission.

Rockwood’s Jackson Hicks and Oakdale’s Brett Bingham led all scorers in the second period with four points each.

The third period was much like the second as both teams made a run.

Powered by six points from Ryan McCain, Rockwood opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 33-21 lead, but the Eagles scored the final five points of the period to make the score 33-26 with six minutes left to play.

Smith scored five points for Oakdale in the third quarter.

Oakdale stayed close throughout the final period, but could never pull to within one possession as Rockwood held on for the 45-39 victory.

McCain (11 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Hicks (11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals) led Rockwood in the win while Smith (13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals) and Corbin King (7 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds) paces Oakdale.

Girls Game

The Lady Tigers fell behind early against the Lady Dragons and could never recover in dropping a 37-28 decision.

Rockwood started slow, trailing 8-5 after one period of play. The Lady Tigers put more points (9) on the board offensively in the second period, but the Lady Dragons added 14 to their tally in taking a 22-14 lead at halftime.

Karlee Bowling led Rockwood in the first half with seven points while Olivia Metcalfe added four.

The Lady Tigers had their best period offensively in the third quarter, scoring 10 points, but York matched Rockwood point-for-point in the frame to make the score 32-24 with one period left to play.

Metcalfe and Camryn Evans scored four points each for Rockwood in the period.

The fourth quarter would see Rockwood’s offense go away in the final period as York outscored the Lady Tigers 5-4 in the frame to make the final score 37-28.

Metcalfe led Rockwood with 10 points in the loss while Bowling added nine.

Zoie Crouch (11 points) and Hannah Garrett (8 points) were the leaders for the Lady Dragons.
