The Rockwood Tigers laid waste to the Tellico Plains Bears by a 42-0 margin Friday night at Civitan Field.
“We did okay tonight,” said Rockwood head coach John Webb. “We came out with intensity and I thought we moved the ball a lot better tonight as well.”
Rockwood got their first score of the game when Everett Campbell capped off a six-play, 35-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
The Jared Breazeale PAT split the uprights, making the score 7-0 with 3:54 left in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, wrapping up a five-play, 39-yard drive, Lucas Jolley barrelled his way through the Tellico Plains defensive line for a one yard touchdown run.
Breazeale’s PAT was good, making the score 14-0 with 11:56 left in the half.
Rockwood got on the board once again with 6:27 in the half, wrapping up a six-play, 66-yard drive with a Jolley to Josh Boles 43-yard touchdown strike.
Breazeale connected on the PAT to make the score 21-0.
On Rockwood’s next drive, they made the score 27-0 on an eight-play, 62 yard touchdown drive with the scoring play coming on an 18-yard sweep by Collin Smith.
Breazeale’s PAT was blocked, leaving the score 27-0 with 1:23 left in the half, which is what they’d go to the locker room with the score at that margin.
Rockwood got their next scoring play on a safety when the Tellico Plains quarterback fell on the ball in the end zone with 7:28 left in the third quarter.
Fourteen seconds later, Smith returned the free kick for a 67-yard touchdown.
The PAT went wide left, making the score 35-0.
With 10:12 left in the final quarter, Rockwood only took two plays to cover 59 yards when Breazeale scored on a 47-yard run. He hit his PAT to make the score 42-0, which is what the game would end at.
Rockwood beat Tellico Plains through the air, 80-19, but where the bulk of the damage was done was on the ground with a 246-88 advantage in that category to take the 326-107 yardage battle.
Rockwood was led through the air by Jolley (3-9, 80 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT). The rushing leaders were Smith (9-70- 1 TD, 177 all-purpose yards, 2 total TDs), Dillon Deardorff (8-52), and Breazeale (1-47-1 TD).
Boles (3-80-1 TD) was the leading receiver for the Tigers and Breazeale (7 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT) along with James Humphreys (6 tackles) led the Tiger defense.
Tellico Plains was led on offense by the rushing tandem of Taylor Ezelle (9-41) and John Sloan (5-37) with Sloan leading the team in tackles with 11.
“We always have things to improve on and we need to look at the film and see where we’re at,” said Coach Webb.
Next up for Rockwood is a showdown with the Coalfield Yellow Jackets, fresh off an impressive 20-0 drubbing of the Oliver Springs Bobcats.
“I know they’re a good team and they like to throw the ball around and do a lot of different things, so hopefully we’ll have something for them next week,” added Webb.
