Tigers wallop Cherokees in double header

The state's first baseball rankings of the year were released Tuesday, and the news was good for the Rockwood Tigers as Joey Cofer's squad are sitting atop the Class A standings.

The Tigers celebrated their No. 1 ranking on Wednesday by ripping Greenback in a double header, 14-3 and 13-3.

Offense was the name of the game for the Tigers as Rockwood pounded out 29 hits in 10 trips to the plate. Eleven of those hits went for extra bases as the Tigers banged out six doubles, one triple and four home runs on the evening.

Game One

All four home runs came in game one as Bryant Allen, Zach Breazeale, Tyler Skidmore and Curt Boston all went yard.

Allen's jack came in the bottom of the first inning as the Tigers grabbed a quick 1-0 lead.

Breazeale opened the second inning with a home run then Zach Duncan, Colden Cooper, Boston, Chase Clem and Allen all crossed the plate as the Tigers led 7-0 after two innings of play.

Skidmore and Boston hit their homers in the third inning as Rockwood's lead ballooned to 12-0.

Beau Mayton, Allen and Shane Doughty also scored in the third inning for the Tigers.

Cooper and Boston scored Rockwood's runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

All nine Tiger starters scored a run on the day.

Allen (2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBIs, 3 runs), Doughty (2-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run), Breazeale (2-2, 1 HR, 2 RBIs), Cooper (2-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) and Boston (3-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 runs) all had multiple hits for the Tigers.

Breazeale picked up the victory on the mound.

Game Two

The second game of the double header was more of the same as the Tigers rolled to a 13-3 victory in six innings.

Rockwood opened the game by scoring a single run in the top of the first inning. Clem singled and scored on a single from Mayton.

The second inning would see Duncan single and score on an RBI grounder from Cooper as the Tigers led 2-0.

Rockwood blew the game open with five runs in the third inning.

Clem tripled to start the inning and he scored on a single from Mayton. Mayton scored on a single from Allen then Doughty walked before Duncan drove in two runs with a double. Duncan scored on a single from Skidmore as the Tigers grabbed a 7-0 lead.

Clem led off the fourth inning with a double and he scored on a double from Allen. Doughty drove in Allen with a single as Rockwood led 9-1 after four innings of play.

Rockwood scored three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-3 lead.

Skidmore, Cooper and Boston scored the fifth inning runs with Cooper, Allen and Doughty picking up RBIs.

Skidmore scored Rockwood's final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning.

Clem (3-5, 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 runs), Mayton (2-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run), Allen (2-3, 1 2B, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Duncan (2-2, 1 2B, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) and Skidmore (3-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 runs) all had multiple hits for the Tigers in the victory.

Duncan picked up the win on the mound.

Rockwood returns to the diamond Tuesday when they host Midway.
