Tigers wipe out Green Waves on Senior Night

The Rockwood Tigers and Lady Tigers celebrated Senior Night Monday with a pair of big District 3-A wins over Midway.

The Lady Tigers took the floor first and picked up a 61-37 victory.

With the win, the Lady Tigers are now the No. 2 seed in the upcoming District 3-A Tournament and receive a first round bye.  Rockwood will play Saturday night at Greenback against Harriman or Berean Christian in the tournament’s semifinals.

Midway enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play Thursday at No. 4 Greenback at 7 p.m.

In the boys game, Rockwood secured the No. 2 seed with a 67-34 victory over the Green Waves.

Rockwood hosts Tennessee School for the Deaf on Friday at 7 p.m. in the tournament’s opening round.

Midway’s boys also play at 7 p.m. on Friday as the No. 4 seed Green Waves host No. 5 Greenback.

Girls Game

Wearing pink uniforms to promote breast cancer awareness, the Lady Tigers rolled to an easy 24-point victory on Monday.

Rockwood opened the game with a 16-0 run and would lead 16-2 after eight minutes of play.

Five Rockwood players scored in the first period with Allison Breazeale, Kiley Gunter and Kellie Mead scoring four points each.

Midway picked things up offensively in the second period, but they couldn’t slow Rockwood as the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Waves 24-10 in the frame to make the score 40-12 at halftime.

Freshman Jade Napier scored seven points in the period for Rockwood while Shaley Grant added five.

Hayley Roberson led Midway in the first half with five points.

Midway actually won the second half of play by four points, but Rockwood’s 28-point halftime lead was too much to overcome.

The Lady Waves won the third period, 11-10, and the final period, 14-11, to make the final score 61-37.

Napier led a balanced Rockwood attack on the night with 13 points and eight assists. 

Mead (10 points) and Breazeale (10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) also scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers while Reanna Henderson (9 points, 5 rebounds), Grant (9 points, 4 rebounds) and Gunter (7 points, 7 rebounds) all scored at least seven points.

Darian Shultz (8 points, 8 rebounds) and Alisa Barger (8 points) led the Lady Waves in scoring while Roberson chipped in seven points and seven boards.

Boys Game

Midway scored first Monday, but that was about all that went right for the Green Waves as Rockwood secured the all-important No. 2 seed with the 33-point victory.

Thomas Viar gave the Green Waves the early 2-0 lead after an offensive rebound, but Midway wouldn’t score again in the opening period as Rockwood led 13-2 after eight minutes of play.

Jared Breazeale and Brendan Kirkland led Rockwood with four points each in the first quarter.

Rockwood scored first in the second quarter to make the score 15-2, but Midway’s Matt Jarvis suddenly caught fire and rallied the Green Waves. Jarvis buried back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 13-4 run that cut Rockwood’s lead to 19-14.

Rockwood, however, ended the half on a 15-5 run of their own to take a 34-19 lead at halftime.

Jarvis ended the period with 12 points for Midway while Cleveland Davidson (8 points) and Cameron Webster (6 points) led Rockwood in the period.

Rockwood put the game away in the third period as they outscored Midway 15-4 in the period to take a commanding 49-23 lead into the final period of play.

Freshman Hunter Golliher knocked down a pair of treys in the frame to spark the Tiger offense.

Rockwood added seven points to their lead in the final period to put the finishing touches on the 33-point victory.

Four Tigers scored in double figures on the night with Davidson (14 points, 6 rebounds) leading the way.  Kirkland (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks), Webster (10 points, 6 rebounds) and Riley Clem (10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) also scored in double figures for Rockwood.

Jared Breazeale added seven points and four assists for the Tigers.

Jarvis led Midway with 12 points while Viar added six points and six rebounds.
