The Tornadoes of Alcoa came to Kingston Friday night and took both games from the Jackets.
The Jackets and Lady Jackets went with the inside game as they were led by their posts while Alcoa’s guards pressed the ball to lead the Tornados. Alcoa won both games beating the Lady Jackets, 52-43, and the Jackets, 50-42.
Kingston won the tip and that was all the excitement for the first three minutes in the first quarter as both teams struggled early.
Alcoa, however, got it together and got on a roll going on a 12-3 run taking advantage of Kingston's lack of offense. Late in the first the Lady Jackets went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to three points, but as time ran out in the period, Alcoa's Tara Shields hit a deep three-pointer to go up 17-11.
Alcoa opened the second quarter with some easy fast break lay-ups that allowed the Lady Tornadoes to take a 30-15 lead at halftime.
The Lady Jackets started out the second half playing some better defense and showing a bit of life, but Alcoa was still able to add to their lead in the third period. Kingston fought hard but in the end they could just not get anything going as Alcoa won by a final of 52-43.
Sydney Nunley led Kingston in defeat with 17 points while Haley Cornellison added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Kingston (43) Nunley 17, Oran 1, Cornellison 12, Layne 2, Sampson 7, Thurman 4.
Both teams played hard and fast in the first quarter, but some early turnaround jumpers from Jordan Huddleston was it for Kingston during the first quarter as Alcoa went on a 6-0 run late in the period to pull away to an 11-4 lead going into the second quarter.
Alcoa started out the second period fast, pushing the lead to 17-6, but Kingston answered back late with a 7-3 run of their own to go into half 22-13.
Kingston started the second half playing hard and really picked up the defense and held Alcoa in check. Kingston’s Brandon Griffis hit two big three-pointers in the second half to get the Jackets back within two points then Huddleston hit a face up jumper to tie the game midway through the fourth.
Down the stretch, however, Kingston could not finish at the rim and Alcoa hit their free throws to finish the game, winning by a score of 50-42.
