A promising first quarter turned into a nightmare for the Midway Green Waves Friday night against Greenback. The Waves jumped out to a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but saw the Cherokees roll off 37 unanswered points in the next three quarters to get a 40-14 win.

On paper, the game against Greenback was closer than the score showed. Midway picked up 316 total yards to 379 for Greenback. The Cherokees had just three more yards on the ground 239 to 236, but had a 60-yard advantage through the air, 140-80.

Midway got the ball first and needed only eight plays to punch in the first touchdown. The drive covered 65 yards and ended in an Aaron Collins five-yard run.

Larry Risner added the PAT to make the score 7-0 with 8:40 left in the first quarter.

Greenback also got on the board on their first possession as Jeremy Miller hit a 24-yard field goal to make the score 7-3.

Midway kept things going on their second possession as they drove 80 yards in 10 plays to make the score 14-3.

Risner capped the drive with a 10-yard run and he also added the PAT with 1:43 left in the first quarter.

The Waves were still looking good headed into the second period as Logan Gurney recovered a Greenback fumble on the final play of the first quarter.

Midway’s offense pushed to the Greenback 29 before stalling and running out of downs.

The rest of the night belonged to the Cherokees, starting with a 66-yard scoring run from Richard Seymour that made the score 14-10.

After a Midway punt, Greenback needed only four plays to take the lead as Seymour scored his second touchdown of the night on a 30-yard run.

Midway’s Brandon Lemons blocked the PAT to leave the score 16-14 with 5:14 left in the half.

Greenback’s next possession was a nine-play, 56-yard drive that ended with QB Hogan Goodson throwing a seven-yard pass to Brandon Williams.

The PAT was good, making the score 23-14 at halftime.

Seymour scored the first Greenback touchdown of the second half with a 33-yard run only 47 seconds into the third quarter.

Midway crossed midfield twice in the second half.

Late in the third quarter, the Green Waves reached the Cherokee 19 before a fumble ended the drive.

On the final possession for the starters, Midway drove to the 36, before Goodson picked off a pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.

Miller also hit a 31-yard field goal in the second half for Greenback.

Collins led Midway on the night with 96 yards rushing on 21 attempts while Risner added 53 yards on 11 carries.

The road doesn’t get much easier this week as the Green Waves visit Grundy County Friday night.
