The Midway Middle School Green Waves picked up their first win of the season in a big way pounding Oakdale 42-0 last Thursday at Midway.
“We started a little slow but we managed to get on track and pull away,” Midway coach Lewis Edwards after the win over the Eagles.
Midway did start slow and could not score in the first quarter against Oakdale. The Waves turned the ball over on downs on their first possession and fumbled the ball away on their second possession.
Midway started to heat up on their third possession as the Green Waves scored when Zach Hearon dashed 65 yards for the touchdown with 7:21 left in the second quarter.
From this point Midway made quick work of the Eagles. Cody Schommer intercepted an Eagle pass on the third play of the next Oakdale possession. Schommer returned the pick to the eight.
Midway scored on the third play on third-and-goal when quarterback Mason Woody slipped in from the one. Jason Gaus got the first seven yards on two carries.
Schommer picked off another Eagle pass and returned it to the end zone, but a block in the back penalty brought the ball back to the 33.
The Green Waves used six plays before Gaus scored from the 10. Gaus also had a 22-yard pick up in the drive. Jonathan Beason added the two-point conversion to put Midway up 20-0 at halftime.
Gaus tacked on one more TD run early in the third quarter on a five-yard run to put Midway up 26-0.
The subs took over and added two more touchdowns later in the game. Dylan Clark scored on a five-yard run late in the third. Woody hit Zach Edwards for the two-point conversion to push the lead to 34-0.
Early in the fourth quarter, Beason scored on a 25-yard run to put the mercy rule into effect. Alex Thomason got the two-point conversion after the Beason touchdown.
The Green Waves improve to 1-3 with the win and will host county rival Harriman this Thursday.
“We’d like to keep it going, but Harriman is always pretty tough,” Edwards said.
