Weeklong Rockwood schools reunion gets under way June 4

-A A +A

The ninth annual reunion for everyone who attended Rockwood schools will be June 4-10 at the Rockwood First Baptist Church lake property on Eagle Furnace Road.

Activities are planned for every day of the week, with the big event culminating on June 9.

Reservations are required and may be made by sending $20 per person to Rockwood Classmates, P.O. Box 12, Rockwood, TN 37854. In order to have adequate food prepared, registration is requested as soon as possible.

The week’s activities starting on June 4 are:

Monday — Set up day, when the property will be mowed, restrooms cleaned, tables and chairs put in place, and other preparations. The class of 1961 is organizing this work; however, everyone is welcome to help. Preparations will begin about 9 a.m.

Tuesday — Bring a freezer of homemade ice cream or fixings for visiting and fun at around 6 p.m.

Wednesday — Bring a covered dish and join the group for a “pot lucky” dinner about 6 p.m. Door prizes are planned.

Thursday — Game Day includes games, prizes and food starting around noon. Rockwood alumni are encouraged to bring the family.

Friday — Dance the night away starting at 6:30 with The Dream Catchers, featuring Rockwood High alumnus Dave Evans.

Saturday — Big event day with class pictures and catered dinner on the ground. Registration required for meal. An auction will follow lunch, with proceeds to help with costs of the reunion. Auction donations may be brought to the reunion. Auction items may also be given to Gail Pugh Wilkey, class of 1961, 354-3907 or 354-1059; or Susan Poland, class of 1971, susanne1213@comcast.net.

Sunday —  7 a.m. sunrise service led by Kenneth Clayton, class of 1961.

A committee will prepare breakfast Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday for a fee.

Remember, all are welcome to attend these daily events.

Several classes are planning special events in conjunction with the reunion week.

The class of 1952 will be celebrating 60 years since its graduation from Rockwood High School. Call Charlie Hill at 423-580-5016 for details.

The class of 1957 will have a 55-year reunion dinner on Friday night.  Call Joan Woodall at 354-9594 for details.

A 50-year reunion dinner on Friday is also planned for the class of 1962. Call Mary Leffew Hood at 354-0548 for details.

Rockwood’s class of 1969 meets annually for dinner on the Saturday of the reunion. Call Pat Buchannon Clifton at 617-9544 for details.

The Rockwood Classmates group was organized about 10 years ago by several Rockwood High School alumni from the 1950s.

Interest in the classmates group grew, and a steering committee was formed to plan and execute the reunions.

Weekly luncheon meetings in Rockwood Street Grill are each Wednesday.

A data base/directory of all available names and addresses for each graduation class is maintained. A free directory will be available to those who register for the 2012 reunion.

An “in memory” list of deceased classmates is also kept and added to as information becomes available.

Research was conducted to secure the names of all Rockwood High School valedictorians and salutatorians, and an engraved plaque was presented to the school showing each of these names. Each year’s honor students will be added to the plaque.

One or more college scholarships are given each year to a graduating Rockwood High School senior.
