The old saying goes “It’s a new season” when the postseason begins.

If Friday night was any sign of a new season for Harriman, then the Blue Devils could go deep in the tournament.

Chris Works took the mound for the Blue Devils and put up a demanding 12 strikeouts for the contest and did not allow a run in a 3-0 win for Harriman over Tellico Plains in the opening round of the District 3-A Tournament played at Paper Maker Field.

Tellico Plains started the game off threatening to score with a couple of bases hits from Dillon McNabb and Tanner Rogers. McNabb, however, was left stranded at third to end the top half of the first.

Harriman’s only runs came in the bottom of the first and that was all they needed. Grant Jenkins got the Blue Devils started off with a leadoff double in the gap, Jenkins scored off an error the next play. Chris Works would cash in a second run for the Devils off a wild pitch to put the Devils up 2-0.

Harriman’s last run started off from a walk by Brantley Diggs, then he was scored off the bat of Dylan Reynolds to put Harriman up 3-0.

Tellico Plains’ last and final rally would happen in the top half of the fourth when the Bears threatened again when Ray Thomas led off the inning with a single. Rogers followed by reaching first off an error to give the Bears some momentum.

Unfortunately for Tellico Plains, they would end the inning with runners stranded at second and third.

With the loss Tellico Plains has been eliminated from the District 3-A Tournament.

With the win Harriman advanced to play Rockwood Tuesday evening at Grace Christian. Win or lose on Tuesday, the Blue Devils will play again on Wednesday against Midway or Grace Christian.
