  • DOE cleanup topic at next League luncheon

    Former American Museum of Science and Energy director Steve Stow will discuss the environmental cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s  Oak Ridge Reservation during an upcoming meeting of the Oak Ridge League of Women Voters.

    The meeting, Lunch with the League, starts at noon Feb. 7 in the social hall of Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

    There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not required.

  • Rotary pancakes a treat for both the tastebuds and the community

    Kingston Rotary Club’s annual pancake breakfast and silent auction next weekend have lasting effects that go beyond a clean plate.

    Proceeds from this year’s breakfast will be used to support the club’s community and international service projects.

    The breakfast will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Feb. 4 in Kingston Church of Christ family center at 120 Spring St., Kingston.

  • OES honors charter member

    Members of Kingston Chapter 405 Order of the Eastern Star recently presented Mary Lou Bradford, seated at right, with a white Bible in honor of her many years of service to the chapter.

    She is the chapter’s only living charter member, and the presentation was made on her 100th birthday, Oct. 24.

    Fellow members honoring Bradford are, front row, Roxie Walker; and back row from left, Gene Walker, Polly Burnette, Ann Branam, Imogene Hodge and Jerry Brackett.

  • Catching up with the new UT baseball coach

    Dave Serrano, left, new head baseball coach at the University of Tennessee, visits with Harriman Rotary Club members Frank Knies, center, and Bob Creswell during the coach’s recent club presentation. 

    Serrano discussed his desire to lead the team to such a level of success that UT would be the place to play college baseball.  It would have such a winning record both on and off the field that recruiting would be easy.

  • Community, BPW to mark special week

    Rockwood Business and Professional Women and Business and Professional Women’s Foundation will observe annual National Business Women’s Week on Oct. 17-21.

    The special designation offers communities, companies and organizations an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of working women’s lives in their communities.

    Rockwood BPW will host a special dinner during the week honoring past presidents of the organization.

  • Music club kicks off 102nd season

    Harriman Music Club will begin its 102nd season on Sept. 8 with a covered-dish picnic at 6 p.m. at the home of George and Margie Wadlington.

    A Roane County High School instrumental ensemble, under the direction of Zack Williamson, will provide special entertainment.

    In case of rain, the event will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Midtown.

  • Kingston Rotary Club marks special anniversary this month

    Kingston Rotary Club celebrated 57 years of service to the community earlier this month.

    At the meeting, charter member George Warlick shared stories of the early days.

    A number of longtime members also chimed in with their memories of the organization through the years.

    Newer members talked about why they joined Rotary, making the commemoration a sharing of the past, present and vision for the future between generations in the true spirit of Rotary.

  • Harriman Music Club plans busy year

    The committee is in the midst of planning a number of programs for the 2011-12 season.

    This 102nd season for the organization will begin with a covered-dish picnic at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Wadlington home.

  • Hensley marks 30 years membership in the DAR

    June Graves Hensley was recently honored by Kingston’s Southwest Point Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution for 30 years of DAR membership.

    Her Revolutionary War ancestor, Martin Miller, also fought in the War of 1812.

    Hensley became a member of the DAR on Dec. 9, 1982, when she joined the Simon Harris Chapter in Knoxville.

    In 1998, she and Mary Bell co-founded the Southwest Point Chapter in Kingston.

    She has served as chapter treasurer, and this year, has made 44 blankets for veterans and children.
