  • Knox manufacturer supporting Camp Buck Toms shotgun range

    SportDOG Brand of Knoxville has extended its support of youth outdoor activities with a $50,000 donation to the Boy Scouts of America’s Great Smoky Mountain Council.

    The funds will be used for the construction of a shotgun range at Camp Buck Toms on Watts Bar Lake near Rockwood.

    Camp Buck Toms is host to 6,500 annual visitors who go to the 750-acre property for camping, swimming, boating, fishing, shooting and other family and scouting activities.

  • Kingston Rotary Club pancake breakfast set

    Kingston Rotary Club will have its annual pancake breakfast and silent auction from 8 to 11 a.m. Feb. 5 in Kingston Church of Christ family center.

    The menu will consist of pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, orange juice, milk and coffee.

    The price is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

    Proceeds raised by last year’s pancake breakfast and silent auction were used to help restore an earthquake damaged health clinic in Haiti and to promote scholarship and reward achievement of students in Roane County schools.

  • Asteroids to be discussed in OR

    The Orion astronomy club will host the talk, “Dawn: Exploring the Asteroids Vesta and Ceres,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in Oak Ridge Civic Center.

    Hap McSween, chancellor’s professor and interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, will address various aspects of the mission launched in September 2007.

  • Reading foundation co-founder to speak to Kingston Rotary Tuesday

    Lynn Fielding, a co-founder of the National Children’s Reading Foundation, will be Kingston Rotary Club’s guest speaker on Jan. 25.  

    Fielding served for 20 years as a director of Kennewick, Wash., schools. He was director of the Washington State School Directors Association the Northwest Evaluation Association.

  • Climate change to be focus at Lunch With the League

    T.J. Blasing of Oak Ridge National Laboratory will discuss “Climate Change: Its Ethical and Economic Issues” during the next Lunch with the League on Jan. 4.  

    Oak Ridge League of Women Voters has the twice-monthly event in Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.

    Lunch begins at 11:45 a.m. and is available on a first-come, first-served basis for $6.

    The program starts at noon.

  • OR heritage group to meet Dec. 9

    The Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association monthly meeting will be a festive one, as the group celebrates the holidays, holds its annual meeting and elects new board members.

    The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 in Midtown Community Center, also known as the Wildcat Den, at 102 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge.

    One of the primary focuses of this month’s meeting will be to recognize a special group of Manhattan Project veterans, the Special Engineer Detachment.

  • Temperance Building a DAR treasure

    Members of Avery Trace Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution were guests during last month’s Heart of Harriman Gala in the historic Temperance Building.

    The event, a fundraiser for the building’s preservation, took on special meaning for the Avery Trace Chapter, which dedicated a DAR marker to commemorate the building and its place in Harriman’s past, present and future.

  • Seniors canasta group to mark game’s 60th anniversary Nov. 18

    This year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the card game canasta.

    To celebrate, the senior citizens canasta group at Kingston Community Center will have an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 18.  

    Activities for the Kingston celebration will include canasta lessons and demonstrations.

    Refreshments will be served during the event, which is free and geared toward all ages.

  • Rockwood Rotary planning 60th anniversary meeting

    Rockwood Rotary Club is making plans for a meeting to commemorate the club’s 60th anniversary.

    The meeting will start at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 in Victorian Square, Rockwood.

    All former Rockwood Rotarians are invited to attend; reservations are required and may be made by calling either J. Polk Cooley at 354-1432 or Maurice Greif at 354-9857.

    Space is limited; those planning to attend are asked to make reservations early to attend the dinner meeting.

    The Rockwood Rotary Club was chartered  in October 1950.
