There has long been great controversy about whether yams and sweet potatoes are the same — or whether they are two different things.
The argument consists of two different opinions, equally adamant.
Some research into the matter is most clearly indicated.
Webster’s Dictionary is a good place to start. It says that sweet potatoes are large, sweet, thick tuberous roots of a tropical vine related to the morning glory, with variously shaped leaves and purple flowers.
In carrying out its mission of encouraging informed and active participation in government and in preparation for the Aug. 7 Roane County General Election, the Oak Ridge League of Woman Voters will have a candidate forum next week.
The forum, at 7 p.m. July 22 in the City Room, A111, on the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College at 701 Briarcliff Ave., is free and open to the public.
