    Brownie Troop 260 of Emory Heights School, led by Georgia Oran, participated in a Pledge of Peace ceremony. Each of the 11 troop members told how they might bring peace to the world and then signed a Pledge of Peace, which was to be carried into space with Christa McAuliffe, the teacher astronaut on the Challenger space shuttle, in January 1986.

    Carolyn Wilson, director of pharmacy for Rockwood’s Chamberlain Memorial Hospital, was part of a delegation of hospital pharmacists from throughout the United States who visited the People’s Republic of China for two weeks. The delegation visited at the invitation of the Chinese Medical Association. Wilson was one of only two pharmacists from Tennessee chosen.

    “A Homecoming History of Harriman and Harriman City Schools” was a sharing of memories of the “good old days” with an emphasis on the education system. Editor Nancy Wimmer said the first printing sold out within a week. Two surprises the interviewers learned: the inventor of the automatic record changer, Vaughn Butler, lived in Harriman; and Harriman once had buses that ran around the clock.

  • Holiday Circuit set for Dec. 30-Jan. 2

    The Tennessee Quarter Horse Association Holiday Circuit, an American Quarter Horse Association-approved show, will be Dec. 30-Jan. 2 at Roane State Expo Center on the main campus of Roane State Community College.

    American Quarter Horse shows test horses’ abilities in dozens of different classes and feature exciting events such as jumping, reining, barrel racing, cutting, roping and pole bending.

    There are also halter classes that judge American quarter horses based on balance, muscling and breed characteristics.

  • See Fort Southwest Point by candlelight for holidays

    Hear ye, Hear ye: Step back in time with this weekend’s candlelight Christmas tour at Fort Southwest Point, Kingston.

    The tour and reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 11.

    The public is welcome to visit and experience the sights, sounds and flavors common to the people of the 18th century.

    Guests will be greeted at the visitors center for the candlelight tour of the fort.

    Beeswax candles will light the walkway, and bagpipe music will set the tone.

  • Roane State planning holiday concert Dec. 10

    Roane State Community College’s Jazz Band, Celebration Singers, Concert Choir, Stage Band, Bluegrass Band and faculty will perform a holiday concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 in the theatre on the Roane County campus.

    A $10 donation per person is suggested.

    The traditional holiday concert includes classic and modern selections, ensemble pieces as well as solos and a carol sing-along.

  • Harriman library key part of annual tour

    Harriman Public Library at 601 Walden Ave. has traditionally been a centerpiece of Harriman’s Tour of Homes during the holiday season.

    The historic Carnegie library will again be a stop on the tour, sponsored by Cornstalk Heights Community Organization.

    This year’s tour will be from noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 11 and from 1 to 6 p.m. Dec. 12.

    The historic structure, built from funds by philanthropist and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, will have an open house and gift shop.

  • Flotilla to help REACH

    The seventh annual Christmas Light Flotilla is scheduled to set sail at about 6 p.m. Dec. 4 from Caney Creek Marina near Rockwood.

    This yearly parade of lighted boats will travel to Kingston City Park.

    Representatives of Operation REACH will be available to take donations for the program.

    Operation REACH is a nonprofit program that raises money to help children buy Christmas gifts for their families.

    The children who participate are in prekindergarten through eighth grade and are recommended by their teachers.

  • Decline a shirt, feed 9

    ’Tis the season to be giving, and Medic Regional Blood Center has a way to double good deeds when stopping by any blood drive this month.

    Medic is known for the free T-shirts it gives to donors, but those giving blood this month can help the hungry by declining the offer.

    “If a donor decides to decline the T-shirt, Medic will make a donation — value of the t-shirt — to Second Harvest Food Bank,” said Medic spokeswoman Christi Fightmaster.
