    Bill and Mary Lindsey of South Harriman were on vacation in Florida when they witnessed the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle. They were on their way to Epcot Center and saw the shuttle go up, cross back over, and explode. It was a shock they said they didn’t expect to forget for a long time.

  • Hurley plans Feb. 5 open house

    New state Rep. Julia C. Hurley, right, has been listening to constituents such as Lynn Farnham since she was elected to the post in November.

    Hurley welcomes the public to her first open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 5 in her new legislative district office in Harriman’s Temperance Building. Light refreshments will be served.

    The public is welcome to stop by and express any concerns and ask questions before the Tennessee General Assembly convenes on Feb. 7.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Jeffrey L. Adams

    U.S. Air Force Airman Jeffrey L. Adams recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

    Son of Heather Raines of Harriman and Mike Adams of Knoxville, he graduated in 2010 from Bearden High School, Knoxville.

    Adams completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

  • Gaze at the stars Saturday

    One advantage to winter’s longer nights is stargazing, and Roane State Community College’s Tamke-Allan Observatory is the perfect place to do it.

    The facility’s next public stargaze is Feb. 5. The gate at the Roane County facility opens at 7 p.m.; the stargaze starts at 7:30.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Randy D. Rollins

    U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Randy D. Rollins was recently presented with the Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez Award for being named the U.S. Air Force in Europe Marquez Award recipient.

    The award is presented to maintenance, communications-electronics maintainers who have demonstrated the highest degree of sustained job performance, efficiency, knowledge and results, and have had direct involvement in sortie (aircraft flight mission) generation.

    Son of Pleas and Diana Rollins of Rockwood, the technical sergeant is a 1999 graduate of Rockwood High School.

  • Free Presidents Day health fair slated

    A free health fair is planned for Presidents Day, Feb. 21, in Luminary United Methodist Church at 3401 River Road, Ten Mile.

    Summit Medical Group of Knoxville will perform free fasting comprehensive blood-screening panels for the first 100 people beginning at 8 a.m. Prostate-specific antigen tests will be conducted.

    Those wishing to take advantage of the blood screenings must have fasted for 12 hours with consumption of only water, black coffee or tea and medications.

  • Child Advocacy Center to benefit from Soup's On

    Tuscan chicken soup makes its debut during Soup’s On, the sixth annual fundraiser for Kids First Child Advocacy Center, a nonprofit agency that serves Roane County.

    The event will be on Feb. 2 in Tellico Village Community Church’s Christian life center.

    Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with dinner planned from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

    Other soups on the menu include Soup’s On favorites Hunter’s chili, Blackfoot potato and Elvis Presley vegetable.

  • Breakfast With Legislators set

    Oak Ridge League of Women Voters will have its first Breakfast With the Legislators session from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Jan. 31 in Oak Ridge Civic Center.

    Area legislators will discuss the outlook for this Tennessee General Assembly session. A free continental breakfast will be served.

    Breakfast With the Legislators will be convened the last Monday of every month during the legislative session and is open to the public. The event will be canceled if Oak Ridge Schools are out due to snow.

  • Chili supper to help pets

    Second Chance K-9 Rescue will have its 12th annual chili supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in Kingston Community Center.

    Cost is $5 and includes chili with the trimmings, dessert and drink. All proceeds help animals in Roane County.

    Second Chance is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that raises money to help spay and neuter pets.

  • Civil War trails guide available

    The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development has updated Tennessee Civil War trails map-guides available to the public.

    The guide identifies nearly 200 Civil War sites throughout Tennessee on this self-guided tour of the trails.

    “More than 500,000 copies of the original map-guide were distributed to the traveling public in little more than six months,” said Susan Whitaker, who serves as co-chairwoman of the Sesquicentennial Commission.
