The commission receives grants and personal donations from private citizens and businesses, and the annual Gala is one of the major fundraising events. A museum is being set up.
Harriman City Schools Alumni Association will present “Elvis at the Princess!,” a tribute to Elvis Presley, at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 in Harriman’s downtown Princess Theatre.
The tribute, featuring Oliver Springs native and award-winning Elvis tribute artist Greg Johnson, falls two days after the 35th anniversary of the death of Presley, a Memphis artist known worldwide as the King of Rock’n’Roll.
Johnson is a regular performer at the Oldies Dinner Showplace in Pigeon Forge.
Roane County ElderWatch and Mid-East Community Action Agency’s Senior Services Department will host a senior open house from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Mid-East office at 1362 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood.
Activities will include entertainment, refreshments, senior services information, door prizes, bingo, games and crafts.
At 10:30 a.m. the winner of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Poster Contest will be recognized.

Harriman Utility Board recently received notification from the Tennessee Regulatory Authority Gas Pipeline Safety Division that the agency has completed an inspection of Harriman’s gas department’s policy and procedures, and no violations were found.
TRA scrutinized files that included plans for management integrity, identification of any threats to the integrity of the pipelines, assessing the risks to the system and implementation of plans to address those threats and the maintenance of records documenting leak repairs and corrosion control.
Kingston Police Explorer Post 376 will be presented with the United States Presidential Volunteer Service Award during Kingston’s National Night Out event on Aug. 7.
The event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. at Kingston City Park Pavilion.
The award recognizes valuable contributions volunteers make in their communities and is a means of thanking Americans who set a standard of service and inspire others to make service a central part of their lives.

The unemployment rate for Roane County rose to 6.6 percent. Even so, a study ranked Roane County 28th out of 95 counties in terms of economical health. Eight economic and demographic variables were taken into consideration, and the outcome was considered a better indicator of economic health than any single variable such as unemployment.
