Evergreen and holly wreaths are everywhere during the holiday season, but all kinds of wreaths adorn our houses the rest of the year.
They include wreaths of grapevine, straw, dried flowers and herbs, ribbon bows and lace ruffles. Even such unlikely materials as pretzels and macaroni make their appearance, not to mention straw hats wreathed with blossoms and ribbons.
One wonders whether the residents of all those houses realize what an ancient tradition they are following.
The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance welcomes Roane Countians to submit nominations of the county’s endangered historic places or structures to be included in the 2012 East Tennessee’s Endangered Heritage list.
Nominations are accepted from Roane, Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Scott, Sevier and Union counties until Jan. 11, 2012.

Roane County Board of Education members voted to use career ladder money to offset the expense of a driver’s education course. A $50 course fee and money sent from the state specifically for driver’s education should cover the cost of the course, which was scheduled to begin the following month.
Roane State Community College’s Roane County and Oak Ridge campuses will offer extended business hours after the holidays to help students get ready for the start of spring classes.
The college will be closed Monday, Dec. 19 through Monday, Jan. 2.
After Roane State reopens on Jan. 3, extended hours will be offered on the following schedule (all times Eastern) at the Roane County and Oak Ridge campuses:
• Saturday, Jan. 7, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
• Monday, Jan. 9-Thursday, Jan. 12, 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
