Ron Coleman became Roane County’s first black elected official when he won his bid for one of three seats on Harriman City Council. Coleman, the top vote-getter in the council race, was named the city’s vice mayor. He said he believes his successful bid for public office was a step in the right direction — that people are trying to change things and start working together and judging people more on their personality than whether they are black or white.
As the sign outside West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department’s station 1 indicates, the department is seeking volunteers to help in its mission to provide fire and emergency services to those in the West Roane County region.
Those wishing to help may stop by the station on Pumphouse Road in Rockwood and talk with Fire Chief Charlie Redwine about the department’s needs.
The station may also be contacted by phone at 354-8201.

Roane County Park opened its newly renovated swimming area, making it an enjoyable and comfortable atmosphere. Donated white plastic pipe enclosed the swimming area, one of the platforms received a new top, and the buildings were all painted, including the bathrooms. A stream runs right through the swimming area, so it acts as a natural purifier.
