The unemployment rate for Roane County rose to 6.6 percent. Even so, a study ranked Roane County 28th out of 95 counties in terms of economical health. Eight economic and demographic variables were taken into consideration, and the outcome was considered a better indicator of economic health than any single variable such as unemployment.
Farmers, ranchers and other agricultural producers have until Aug. 1 to nominate eligible candidates to serve on Farm Service Agency county committees.
“County committees play a vital role in the administration of federal farm programs and the positive effect they have on rural communities,” said Linda Tipton of the USDA’s Roane/Loudon County Farm Service Agency.
Harriman Police Department is calling this year’s National Night Out celebration “a good night to get to know your neighbors and give crime a going-away party.”
The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7 at Harriman Riverfront Park.
The Tennessee Department of Revenue reminds Tennesseans that the seventh annual Sales Tax Holiday is scheduled for Aug. 3-5.
During these three days, Tennessee shoppers can save nearly 10 percent on tax-free clothing, school and art supplies and computer purchases.
“The annual Sales Tax Holiday was designed with Tennessee families in mind, providing savings for families, especially as students start the new school year,” Gov. Bill Haslam said.

Kingston Regional Planning Commission gave strings-attached approval to final development plans of Brentwood Landing. The state planner said most of the problems would be easy to take care of. Everything was ready; it just wasn’t at the meeting. Construction activity was expected to begin within the month.
Present and prospective Girl Scout volunteers are welcome to attend Leaderfest, an inaugural inspirational and informative event on Aug. 11 in Alcoa.
Leaderfest, organized in part by the Roane County Service Unit, will offer workshops on a variety of topics, such as songs; ceremonies; science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs; discipline issues; crafts; and games for all ages.
A special session will address troop basics, including the changes to the Girl Scout program over the past few years.
They may also be picked up at the Mid-East office at 1362 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood. Office hours are from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:15 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 to 1 p.m. Friday.
