Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced the formation of the Task Force on Aging, a group charged with creating a plan to improve the lives and care of older Tennesseans and their families through a collaboration of public, private and nonprofit leaders.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 14 percent of Tennesseans are 65 years of age or older, and the national average is 13.7 percent. Tennessee’s number is expected to grow to more than 22 percent by 2020.

Harrell’s IGA of Harriman and Kingston was ready to answer the call of grill chefs looking to take advantage of the last days of summer. USDA choice sirloin steak was on sale for $1.89 a pound. Salad fixings were also on sale, with lettuce at 59 cents per head, large slicing tomatoes at 2 pounds for $1, and green peppers at two for 69 cents. At Goldston’s Grocery in South Harriman, a 50-pound bag of potatoes could be bought for $3.99, and JFG coffee was $1.69 per bag.
Roane County Master Gardeners will have an Aug. 24 workshop on preservation of the harvest and cool season gardening, the third workshop in a Sustainable and Edible Landscapes series.
Discussion includes food preservation principles and techniques, preventing insects from overwintering in the garden and other key cool-season gardening topics; a hands-on demonstration of food preservation techniques.
