  • Take in spring’s beauty on the rails

    Roane County’s Southern Appalachia Railway Museum will have narrated one-hour spring colors trips and a Murder Mystery dinner train this month.

    The spring colors trips will depart at 11 a.m., 1  and 3 p.m. on April 6 and 20. Tickets are $19 for adults, $15 for ages 3-12.  

    Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling the museum at 865-241-2140.

    During the rides, a short narrative will describe the historic Manhattan Project and the historical significance of the railroad serving it.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Jacob R. Hester

    Airman Jacob R. Hester recently graduated from U.S. Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

    Son of Shannon and Lisa Hester, he is presently stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, in training to be a firefighter. Upon completion of his training, the airman will be transferred to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.

    Hester's grandparents are Pat Hester and the late Raymond Hester, the late Mary Carlene Morris, Reva Nickell and the late James Nickell.

    His brothers are Sammy and Jonathan.

  • Tony winner Kreis to give Knox concert: Only chance to see OS native’s show in Tennessee

    Levi Kreis garnered a 2010 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, thanks to his electrifying performance as Jerry Lee Lewis in “Million Dollar Quartet” on Broadway.

    Now the Oliver Springs native has scheduled a one-night performance at Pellissippi State Community College.

    The March 30 event brings the Pellissippi State alumnus to the stage for an evening of cabaret-style vocals and piano.

    Kreis performs at 7:30 p.m.

    Tickets are $25 and can be ordered online at www.pstcc.edu/tickets.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Levi G. Fletcher

    U.S. Army Pvt. Levi G. Fletcher recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

     Fletcher, a 2012 graduate of Roane County High School, is the brother of John Fletcher of Kingston.

    During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness.

  • Calfee passes first House bill

    First-term state Rep. Kent Calfee, R-Kingston, officially passed his first bill recently in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

    House Bill 940, which creates a special committee to review Tennessee's underground utility damage prevention program, will now travel to the desk of Gov. Bill Haslam to be signed into law.

  • The Garden Gate: Easter Bunny's all in the stars

    Easter traditions and religious references are everywhere right now, and lilies and churchly references are universal.  

    So how did rabbits get in the picture? And how could a rabbit lay many-colored eggs?

    The Easter Bunny legend finds its roots in the mythology of a constellation of stars. In this case it is the constellation of Lupus the Hare.

    In Greco-Roman mythology, Hermes, messenger to the Olympian gods, placed Lupus among the stars to honor its swiftness.

  • Soup’s On to help out abused kids

    Kids First Child Advocacy Center of the 9th Judicial District will have its first Roane County Soup’s On fundraiser on April 4.

    Both lunch and dinner of homemade soup, bread and cookies will be served in Kingston First Baptist Church’s family life center.

    Lunch hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

    Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

    Proceeds from the event benefits the Child Advocacy Center.

  • Caregivers course starts next week

    A free six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers course will begin April 7 in Mid-East Community Action Agency’s Roane County office at 1362 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood.

    The course will be taught from 2:30 to 5 p.m. for six consecutive Sundays through May 12.

    Powerful Tools Class Leaders and Master Trainers Kate and Dale Allen, assisted by Mid-East Senior Services Director Amber Jacks, will teach the course.

    Although there is no fee, class size is strictly limited, and pre-registration is required.
