The Tennessee Wars Commission and the Tennessee Historical Commission will begin accepting applications on Dec. 1 for a new grant program to provide funding to protect Civil War and Underground Railroad sites in Tennessee.
Grant funding is made possible by the Tennessee Civil War Sites Preservation Act of 2013, which was passed this year by the Tennessee General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Haslam.
Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Ninth Judicial District is offering two opportunities for the public to have a child’s or pet’s photo taken with Santa while discussing how to help abused children.
Santa will be in front of the former Roane Medical Center in Harriman from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 before the Harriman Christmas parade.
The second opportunity will be from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 14 at Earl Duff Subaru, Harriman.

The money was raised during Calfee’s inaugural spaghetti dinner and dessert auction, with all proceeds from the event going to Operation REACH, a charitable organization that enables children in need to go Christmas shopping every holiday season.
AAA projects 43.4 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
That’s a decrease of 1.5 percent from the 44 million people who traveled last year. This decrease falls just shy of last Thanksgiving’s four-year peak since the recession-driven declines in 2008-09, when Thanksgiving travel fell by 25 percent.
The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 27, to Monday, Dec. 2.
