  • Dems to meet on July 14

    The Roane County Democratic Party Executive Counsel will meet at 7 p.m. July 14 in The Cottage at Roane County Park.

    These meetings are the second Thursday of each month and are open to all Roane County Democrats.

  • Roane Choral awarded arts grant

    The Tennessee Arts Commission is awarding a $3,300 grant to the Roane Choral Society.

    “The Roane Choral Society has been a rich part of our county’s artistic heritage for many years,” said state Sen. Ken Yager, R-Harriman.

    “This money is very important to their efforts, and I am delighted it has been awarded,” he added.

    The award, given in the category of Rural Support for the Arts, applies to the 2011-12 fiscal year, which begins in July.

  • Rockwood 2000 thanks workers with picnic

    Rockwood 2000 hosted a picnic earlier this month in appreciation of Rockwood city employees.

    This yearly event in Rockwood’s Homecoming Park is a means of recognizing the employees’ hard work throughout the year.

    “Of all the events that Rockwood 2000 is involved in, this is my favorite,” said Mary Kau, Rockwood 2000 vice president.

    Along with everything they provide the city, Rockwood city employees assist Rockwood 2000 with many projects that would be impossible without their help.

  • Hurley secretary of energy caucus task force

    State Rep. Julia Hurley, R-Lenoir City, has been appointed secretary of a newly formed Republican Caucus Energy Task Force in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

    Hurley, who represents Roane County in the state General Assembly, is among seven House members appointed to the task force by House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick, R-Chattanooga.

    The task force, according to McCormick, will “explore the various ways that the energy industry can provide a positive impact on job growth and economic development in our state.”

  • Wednesdays are wonderful at OR's Children's Museum

    Entertaining guests will perform their monkeyshines from 11 a.m. to noon June 29 as part of Wonderful Wednesdays at the  Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

    Mary Lynn Campbell of SunShine MonkeyShines will provide fun facts about monkeys as they entertain and interact with the audience.

    Special Wonderful Wednesday programs will take place each week from 11 a.m. to noon through Aug. 5 during Imagination Station Summer Camp.

    The programs are free with admission to the museum at 461 West Outer Drive, Oak Ridge.

    The Ahlers, who received the honor during the recent Lincoln Day Dinner, were recognized for their dedication, commitment and support of the county’s Republican Party.

    About 300 GOP faithful attended the annual event, which celebrated the life and presidency of Ronald Reagan with keynote speaker Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey.

  • First lady to help start up reading foundation

    Tennessee First Lady Crissy Haslam will be the keynote speaker for the kick-off luncheon for The Children’s Reading Foundation of the Tennessee Valley.

    The foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping parents understand how important it is to read to and with their young children daily.

    The luncheon kickoff will begin at 11:30 a.m. July 21 in the student lounge of Roane State Community College’s main campus in Roane County.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Christopher A. Washam

    U.S. Army Pvt. Christopher A. Washam recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

    Son of James and Lisa Washam of Kingston, he is a 2008 graduate of Roane County High School.

    During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions.

    The unemployment rate in Roane County dipped 0.5 percent in April to 7.2 percent. The state’s estimated jobless rate also dropped 0.5 percent to 7.8 percent, the lowest April rate since 1980.
