Arts in Motion dancer Zephanie Dykes was selected through audition in Atlanta to attend the prestigious Alvin Ailey School in New York City this summer.
Dykes, 15, was the only dancer from Tennessee selected during the Atlanta audition, which included competition from dancers throughout the Southeast.
Daughter of Scotty and Stacy Dykes, she is a freshman at Hardin Valley School, Knoxville.
Dykes has trained exclusively with Arts in Motion in Kingston.

Those of us who belong to garden clubs tend to think of our own little group as a small, self-contained, unique and special little island of activity. And, of course, in many ways it is. But it is also a very real part of what has become a great force over the last 100 years and which has become a vast influence on gardening all over the world.
Public libraries in Kingston and Rockwood will each be awarded $21,866 in grant funding to upgrade technology.
“Libraries in rural areas play an especially important role in connecting citizens with the resources and opportunities that are oftentimes isolated to urban areas,” said Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett, whose office awards the grants in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development.
Observe, investigate and experiment with fully functioning replicas of machines, structures and amusement park rides with K'Nex: Building Thrill Rides, an exhibit open through Sept. 11 in the American Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge.
This special exhibition is designed to captivate young visitors and provide them the opportunity to explore the science, math and technology behind hair-raising amusement park thrill rides.
Nursing homes across Tennessee are in the throes of a number of activities in honor of National Nursing Home Week.
The special week began Mother’s Day, May 8, and continues through May 14. Gov. Bill Haslam also has proclaimed May 8-14 Nursing Home Week in Tennessee.
Roane County United Way will once again be taking over Roane State Community College’s campus for its annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 21. The event will run from
11 a.m.-4 p.m., following CASA’s Run for the Child fundraising event.
CASA’s 5k run, walk and shorter fun walk begin at 8 a.m. Day of run registration is at 7 a.m. Money from the run will be used to train volunteers to be court advocates for children who have suffered abuse or neglect.

Michael Dunn Rehabilitation Center celebrated its 15th anniversary with an informal ceremony that included clients and the general public. The center in 15 years had grown from a basement organization to include an expanded building, two greenhouses, children’s residences, a Michael Dunn workshop and Dunn Diversified Industries.
