In one way or another — sometimes favorably, sometimes quite the opposite — bugs call themselves to our attention.
The idea of eating insects is pretty off-putting to most of us, but insects of various kinds are a staple food in some parts of the world.
Insects were considered delicacies in ancient times. A kind of wood-boring grub was often served as an hors d’oeuvre at parties in Rome. Aristotle, a great cicada fancier, wrote at length about how to prepare them.

Samuel F. Yette, a Harriman native and professor at Howard University in Washington D.C., was honored by St. Mary’s Baptist Church. Yette was also the honored guest at a membership drive rally for the NAACP.

The city of Harriman’s Memorial Day Parade will be on May 28.
In the event of inclement weather, activities will be at the American Legion.
The event will honor all military veterans who have served to protect the U.S. The Memorial Day parade will extend gratitude to all emergency service workers who have paid the ultimate price while protecting U.S. citizens.
The morning events of the day will begin at 10 a.m., when the Harriman American Legion Museum opens with a display of wartime memorabilia.

A day of family-oriented summer fun is on tap June 11 during Roane County Park’s second annual SummerFest.
Crafters, vendors, food and more are in store for the event, which kicks off with the SummerFest 5k at 8 a.m.
All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in the running or walking event. Advance registration, including a T-shirt, is $25 and will close on June 6.
In an effort to provide financial education opportunities throughout the community, the Roane Alliance for Financial Independence is offering a free five-part series on helping area residents stretch their dollars.
The classes, at 6 p.m. each Wednesday, start today, May 25, in Kingston First Baptist Church.
The series will cover budgeting, saving, credit reports, homeownership and investments.
The Roane Alliance for Financial Independence is a United Way initiative.

The paver bricks, part of Rockwood 2000’s Memory Lane project at the downtown park, will be dedicated during a Memorial Day ceremony at 2 p.m. May 30.
The paver bricks were purchased during a special discounted offer from Rockwood 2000 to area veterans.
