  • Oral Baptist plans patriotic program

    Oral Baptist Church, Roane County, will have a special patriotic program on July 2.

    The free community event begins at 7 p.m. and features the Whitestone Singers.

    Under the direction of Eugene Hattaway, the group is a favorite at Whitestone Country Inn during the Christmas and Fourth of July seasons.

    The Whitestone Singers perform

    annually for candlelight tours at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., and participate in the chorus for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

  • Farm Hands Quartet to give free concert at Midtown church

    The Farm Hands Bluegrass Quartet will give a free gospel concert at 5 p.m. July 13 in Midtown Valley United Methodist Church.

    The church is at 1625 Roane State Hwy. A love offering will be taken, and a potluck supper will follow the concert.

    The Farm Hands Bluegrass Quartet performs more than 150 dates per year.

    The quartet’s album, “In a Country Town,” is the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America’s 2014 Album of the Year.

  • Daniel to speak at annual event

    Michele R. Daniel will be the guest speaker during the annual Edgar Fritz Memorial Scholarship Program at Little Leaf Baptist Church, Oliver Springs.

    The program will start at 4 p.m. June 8.

    The scholarship was established after the death the Rev. Edgar Fritz in August 1978. The church has provided more than 50 scholarships. Daniel is a former recipient.

  • Eagle project a thank you to Bethel Presbyterian Church

    Daniel Palmer recently enhanced the landscape around Kingston’s Bethel Presbyterian Church as his Eagle Scout project.

    Palmer focused on Bethel because of the long-standing relationship between the church and Kingston’s Boy Scout Troop 101, which has met at Bethel for the past 64 years.

    The project was his way of thanking the church because of all he learned and the many years of good experiences during troop meetings at the church. Palmer’s love of plants prompted the landscaping theme.

  • Gold City to sing in Princess Theatre

    Gold City, the Gadsden, Ala.-based award-winning Southern Gospel ensemble, will give a benefit performance beginning at 7 p.m. June 6 in Harriman’s Princess Theatre at 421 Roane St.

    Proceeds from the performance will support the Princess Theatre Foundation.

    The group includes, from left, Robert Fulton, Daniel Riley, Tim Riley, Chip Pullen and Bryan Elliott.

    Tickets are $15 and are available at Rocky Top General Store and Harriman Jewelry Exchange.

  • McKameys Hometown Singing coming up

    The McKameys, a premier East Tennessee family gospel-singing group from Clinton, will host their 31st annual Hometown Singing on June 6-7 in Clinton Second Baptist Church.

    The Inspirations of Bryson City, N.C., will be the special guest at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

    Saturday’s special guest will be The Rochesters of Blacksburg, S.C., at 6 p.m.

    Reserved seating is $15; general admission is $13.

  • Bethel Presbyterian a certified NWF habitat site

    The congregation of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Kingston, recently received notification from the National Wildlife Federation that the church has been officially certified as a Wildlife Habitat site.

    Church members have been has been working since 2009 to make the landscape around the church more environmentally friendly to nature.

    Many areas around the church are mulched to create plant space that improves habitat for wildlife by providing essential elements needed – natural food sources, cover and places to raise their young.

  • Lower retiring from Wesleyan Church

    The congregation of Rockwood Wesleyan Church will honor the faithful service of Pastor Robert “Bob” Lower during its 11 a.m. service on June 8.

    Lower, who has served as church pastor for 21 years, is retiring. He has also served as chaplain for the Rockwood Fire Department during his 21 years with the Wesleyan Church.

    The public is welcome to join in the celebration of Lower’s dedication to the Lord, his community and his congregation.

  • Moore to speak at Sevier Drive Church

    Bro. Joe Moore of Scarboro Church of Christ, Oak Ridge, will be the guest speaker at Sevier Drive Church of Christ, Harriman, on June 1.

    Moore will teach Sunday school 10:45 a.m. and deliver the service message at 11:30 a.m.
