  • Roschli, Thew receive CCW scholarships

    The Council of Catholic Women at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harriman, has awarded scholarships of $500 each to Alex Roschli and Elizabeth Thew.

    Both are children of Blessed Sacrament parishioners.

    Roschli, a 2011 Roane County High School graduate, graduated with a 4.02 grade-point average and was ranked sixth in his class of 196 graduates.

    A participant in the Gifted Program, he was a member of the school’s Beta and Republican clubs.

  • Bridge marks Day of Prayer

    The Bridge at Rockwood participated in a coordinated prayer event on May 5, joining millions of other Americans to recognize what has been designated as the National Day of Prayer.

    The Bridge at Rockwood was among the Signature Healthcare facilities that had a prayer service. Some released biodegradable balloons or carried out other symbolic acts. An event at Signature’s Louisville, Ky., headquarters was transmitted via live webcast.

  • McKameys plan Hometown Singing

    The McKameys, a premier East Tennessee family gospel-singing group from Clinton, will host their annual Hometown Singing on June 10-11 in Clinton Second Baptist Church.

    The Inspirations of Bryson City, N.C., will be the special guest at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

    Saturday’s special guest will be the Primitive Quartet of Candler, N.C. at 6 p.m.

    Reserved seating is $14; general admission is $12.

  • Faith Primitive marking 30th anniversary

    Faith Primitive Baptist Church, Harriman, will celebrate its 30th anniversary during its homecoming service on June 5.

    The church, on State Street, was founded on June 7, 1981 by the Rev. Walter C. Nichols (April 16, 1932-June 25, 1999). Homecoming will serve as a Founders Day commemoration and a celebration of Nichols’ life.

  • Chaplains add patient care to agendas

    Harriman’s Roane Medical Center will soon welcome 10 new chaplains and trained church volunteers to its volunteer, on-call program.

    The program is designed to provide comfort and spiritual guidance for patients and visitors.

    The hospital had a volunteer, on-call chaplain training session this week that included information on hospital policies and procedures, proper protocols for visiting a hospital patient, crisis intervention, and a panel discussion on religious diversity.

  • Bible prophecy series starts May 25

    In recent years, stories about Bible prophecies and ancient predictions have become headline news.
    Some say the world will end on May 21. Others claim the Earth will meet its end in
    2012.
    With all of this confusion, many people are wondering: Can we know the future? Is it possible to decode the vivid prophecies in the Bible?
    From May 25-28, Pastor John Bradshaw of “It Is Written Television” will use the Bible to explore these mysterious prophecies.

  • Kellytown plans Friends, Family Day

    Kellytown Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, will have its annual Friends and Family Day on May 22.
    This event is a time for gathering friends and family and meeting for a time of joy and gladness in the celebration of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
    Special music will be provided by The Miller Family of Oliver Springs.
    The Millers were all born
    and raised in the area and have been singing together for several years.

  • Johnson, Barksdale counselors at conference

    Darlene Johnson and Carrie Barksdale represented Sevier Drive Church of Christ, Harriman, during the 35th Tennessee State Youth Conference in Nashville.

    The Churches of Christ of Middle Tennessee was responsible for last month’s conference, which began at Strader Lane Church of Christ and concluded at Nashville’s Music City Sheraton.

    “What Message R U Sending,” from Matthew 5:14-16 and 1 Timothy 4:12, was the theme of the conference, which was attended by 1,200 youths and their parents.

  • Aid for Alabama effort under way

    Four Roane County churches are banding together in a communitywide effort to collect donations for Alabama tornado victims.

    The effort, Aid for Alabama, is seeking new and slightly used household items to replace those lost due to the April 27 tornadoes that struck the state.

    Volunteers from Kingston’s Victory Baptist Church, Cedar Grove Baptist Church, New Midway Baptist Church and Potters House Church of Midtown will collect all donations through May 25.

  • Braxton Chapel to give 4 scholarships

    Braxton Chapel AME Zion Church, Kingston, is taking applications for scholarships to be given to four high school and/or college students.

    Applications will be accepted through June 10. Scholarships will range from $500 to $1,000.
