  • Rockwood church 140 years old

    Members of Rockwood First Presbyterian Church are gearing up to celebrate the church’s 140th anniversary.

    The anniversary of the city’s oldest-established church was officially in April, but the congregation is planing a formal homecoming celebration this summer to mark the church’s years of service to Jesus Christ.

    The church began shortly after the founding of Rockwood in 1867 when E. Riggs Forsythe, a Presbyterian layman, took it upon himself to organize a union Sunday school.

  • Kids Café in need of a freezer

    Rockwood Ministerial Association is asking for a donation of a freezer to store food for a new program with Second Harvest Food Bank.

    The program, Kids Café, offers free dinners to children from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday in Rockwood Housing Authority’s community room at Evans Heights at 320 W. Carpenter St.

  • National Day of Prayer is May 5

    The 60th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer will be on May 5.

    In Roane County, the observance will be marked with a special gathering in prayer at noon at the Harriman Temperance Building.

    A Mighty Fortress is Our God, from Psalm 91:2, is this year’s theme.

    Millions of people are expected to gather in thousands of forums across America for this special event to pray for this nation.

  • St. Andrew's preparing for Holy Week

    St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Harriman, welcomes the public to its observance of Holy Week and the joyous feast of the Lord’s Resurrection — the most important feast of Christianity.

    “The week prior to Easter is observed by liturgical churches as the final time of preparation for Easter,” explained the Rev. Joseph Pinner, rector at St. Andrew’s.

    Maundy Thursday worship begins at 7 p.m. April 21. The Good Friday Liturgy will be read at noon and 7 p.m. April 22.

  • Victorious Valley Girls Choir to sing in OS

    The Victorious Valley Girls Choir will sing during the 10:55 service on April 17 in Kellytown Baptist Church, Oliver Springs.

    Jason Casay, director of Victorious Valley Homes, will deliver the morning message.

    Victorious Valley Homes is a ministry of Victorious Valley Baptist Church, which Casay pastors in Sunset, S.C.

  • Program shows how Jesus held Passover

    “Messiah in the Passover,” a demonstration of how Jesus fulfilled the ancient feast of Passover, will be presented at 6 p.m. April 18 at Midtown Valley United Methodist Church.

    The church is at 1625 Roane State Hwy. A love offering will be received.

    Michael Viselli will conduct the presentation. It begins with the traditional Passover Seder table, complete with all articles of this key Jewish celebration.

  • New Anglican church in Crab Orchard

    After two months of planning, the Anglican Church of the Cumberlands and its 15 members — including two from Roane County — will witness history in the making with the church’s first worship service on April 10.

    Father Ernie Pinto will conduct the Passion Sunday Eucharistic service, which begins at 3:30 p.m. in Crab Orchard Christian Church on Hwy. 70.

  • Seminar to cover poverty awareness

    Kingston United Methodist Church will have a poverty awareness seminar on April 6 in the church’s ministry center at 212 W. Church St.

    Joe Parker will lead the training from noon to 5 p.m. Parker is secondary supervisor for Roane County Schools.

    The seminar cost is $10, which includes purchase of a book for the course.

    Space is limited to the first 25 registrants.

    Reservations by paying the fee are requested by March 30 to ensure adequate materials for participants.

  • Rockwood pastor opens Tenn. Senate session

    Rockwood First Baptist Church Senior Pastor Josh Lancaster, center, recently delivered the invocation for a recent session of the Tennessee State Senate.

    Lancaster was the guest of state Sen. Ken Yager, right.

    The Senate starts each legislative day with a prayer before taking up the legislative calendars.

  • Garden grants to be offered starting April 1

    Roane County Cooperative Ministries will again offer Self-Help Garden Grants beginning April 1.

    These grants of up to $25 per family are offered to low -income residents of Roane County.  Grants are intended to cover the cost of seeds, plants and one bag of fertilizer to encourage recipients to plant small home gardens to help feed their families.

    Over the years, the garden grants have been funded by various sources and individuals and by grants from the Hunger Committee of the East Tennessee Presbytery.
