  • Constitution seminar Saturday

    A seminar, “Our Constitution: A Godly Design for Government,” will be presented Nov. 3 in Grace Community Church at 438 W. Race St., Kingston.

    The countywide seminar on the U.S. Constitution will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

    It will be taught by Ray Morgan, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot and ROTC instructor.

    Morgan, an avid student of the U.S. Founding
    Fathers, developed this course on the Constitution as part of the ROTC curriculum at Charleston Southern University.

  • Prayer service, balloon release for drug abuse

    Those who have suffered from drug abuse, as well as those who give thanks that the negative effects of drug abuse haven’t entered into their lives are encouraged to join family and friends of Clayton Smith and the Roane County Anti-Drug Coalition for a special prayer and “Say No to Drugs” balloon release.

    The ninth annual event starts at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Smith’s gravesite at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

  • Church pianist remembered with a special scholarship

    A scholarship in memory of Marie Guinn, former pianist of Liberty Baptist Church, Lawnville Road, Kingston, will be helping a church member attend college.

    Family members said Isaac Allen, a youth at the church Guinn devotedly attended, was selected. The youth is one of six children in his family.

    The family of Guinn, who passed away Aug. 19, 2011, wanted to honor her memory in some way, and decided to do a scholarship.

  • Annual campaign gives to needy kids

    It’s time once again to fill shoe boxes with small gifts to be collected and sent all around the world to needy children.

    Roane County’s collection week for Operation Christmas Child is Nov. 12-18.

    Operation Christmas Child is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief and evangelism organization run by Franklin Graham.

    Missionary Bob Pierce began the program in 1970, and Graham took it over in 1978.

  • Little Leaf Baptist to be a part of OS Old Town tour

    Little Leaf Baptist Church will participate in the Tour of the Old Town in Oliver Springs on Oct. 19.

    The Oliver Springs Historical Society’s walking tour will start on Main Street, where people of the community will portray those of the town’s past to tell their stories.

    Julia Hopper Daniel from Little Leaf Baptist Church will play the part of Adeline Staples, her great-great-grandmother who was born into slavery in 1845.

    • Rockwood United Methodist Church will have its two day Christmas bazaar in the church at 801 N. Kingston Ave. Bazaar hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and start at 9 a.m. Saturday. A potato soup/chili meal on Friday is available for $6. Handmade items and baked goods are among the sale items offered during the bazaar; a couple of auctions are also planned.   • St. Andrew’s project aims to give kids a smile

    “Hoping to give a child a smile when that child really doesn’t have much to smile about” is how Dianne Beha described a recent outreach project of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Harriman.

    “Filling their little arms with a warm stuffed animal gives hope and love to them when it is needed,” added Beha, president of the church’s Episcopal Churchwomen.

    Hundreds of stuffed animals — ranging from whimsical to hand stitched — were purchased and brought to the church over several weeks.

  • Oak Ridge church selling to developers

    The 250-member congregation of Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church voted last week to accept the offer by developers Blanchard and Calhoun to sell the church.  

    This clears the way to include the church property in a planned retail development at Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike.

    “The voting that occurred following the Sunday worship service was conducted in accordance with the bylaws of the church,” said David Savoie, president of the Board of Trustees.

    • The adult Bible class of Roane Church of Christ, Kingston, will study “God’s Glory” at 9:30 a.m. The worship service sermon, “The Bible Doctrine of Authority,” will be delivered at 10:30 a.m. The church is at 1204 S. Kentucky St.

    MONDAY, OCT. 1
    • Edgewood Baptist Church, Kingston, will have a two-day youth revival with Evangelist Greg Locke. Services begin at 7 p.m. daily through Oct. 2. The church is at 750 Gallaher Road.

  • St. Andrew’s to bless animals for 3rd year

    St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Harriman will join other churches across the country and around the world on Oct. 6 in the custom of the Blessing of the Animals.

    This is the third annual celebration for St. Andrew’s and will be open to the public. A line of pets — everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses — will begin forming at 2 p.m. at the church at 180 Circle Drive.
