  • Acting minister to speak at homecoming

    “Are You Covered?” from Psalms 91:3-4 will be the theme of Sevier Drive Church of Christ’s 2013 homecoming.

    The homecoming service will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 8 in the church at 1014 Sevier Drive, Harriman.

    Dinner will be served after the evening worship service.

    The church’s acting minister, Bro. Glynn Whitaker, will be the speaker.

    Whitaker, the youngest of nine children, was born in Suffolk, Va., to Arthur and Alma Whitaker.

  • Grace Church’s 5K raising money for SIDS research

    October is Infant Loss Awareness Month, and Kingston’s Grace Community Church is hosting “The Chase,” a 5K race and 1-mile family fun walk to raise money for infant loss awareness.

    The Oct. 19 race at Fort Southwest Point, Kingston, is  in loving memory of Chase Austin Ruffner. Chase, infant son of church members Isaiah and Brittany Ruffner, lost his life to sudden infant death syndrome.

  • Fall Into His Arms conference slated

    Morrison Hill Christian Church, Kingston, will be the site of the first Fall into His Arms Women’s Conference.

    Organizers call it “The first of its kind in Roane County.” It will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 13 and from 9 to 3 p.m. Sept. 14 in the church at 106 Morrison Hill Circle.

    The conference is organized by Brenda Wright, a Bible teacher at Morrison Hill Christian Church.

  • Singing to honor Harvey, help OS Historical Society

    The Oliver Springs Historical Society’s C.S. “Sonny” Harvey Memorial Gospel Singing will feature a number of area singers and groups.

    The singing, a tribute to the longtime Oliver Springs businessman and Historical Society supporter who died in January, will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 in the former Beech Park activity building on Old Butler Road, Oliver Springs, adjacent to the Windmill Inn.

  • Red Cross seeks shelter-team churches

    The American Red Cross Tennessee Mountain Valley welcomes Roane County area churches to partner with them to become shelter teams.

    “The training will aid the Red Cross when shelters need to be opened quickly” said Mary Beth Birge, director of emergency services for the East Tennessee Region.

    The Red Cross recently partnered with six shelter-team churches in Blount County.  

    Red Cross instructors trained 38 people in those churches.  

  • 50 years for St. Mary’s Baptist Gospel Chorus

    St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church Gospel Chorus will celebrate its 50th choir anniversary beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 10.

    Various choirs and soloists will be attending this service to help with the celebration.

    The church is at 1038 Trenton St., Harriman.

  • Homecoming ’13 cancelled

    Old Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Rockwood, has cancelled its homecoming this year due to work in the church.

    The church is at 701 Smith Mountain Road.

  • New food, clothes outreach started

    Walnut Hill Baptist Church, Harriman, now offers food and clothing assistance.

    Faye Daniels, the community church’s outreach laywoman, decided to organize the activity that will be open for distribution from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Tuesday.

    “This is just something the Lord has laid on my heart for outreach,” she said. “I just wanted to be able to help the community. I know there are so many people out there in need.”

    She added, “If we see a need, we’ll do it another extra day.”
