  • Church Calendar: April 27-May 5

    SATURDAY, APRIL 27
    • Union Valley Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, will have a gospel singing starting at 7 p.m. Featured singers include Roy Freels, Hallelujah Praise and the Praise Him youth choir. The church is on Windrock Road. Call Pastor Wayne Morgan at 435-4150 for details.

    • Harriman First Presbyterian Church will have a fundraising Deacons Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to noon at the church at 601 Clinton St.

  • Day of Prayer observance set in Harriman

    As the nation struggles with various issues, U.S. citizens are preparing to exercise their freedom to gather, worship and pray.

    Millions will answer the call to prayer on May 2 in observance of the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer.

    Organized events will be held in thousands of public venues, including Harriman, where intercession will be made for America and its leadership.

    The Harriman observance will begin at noon at the Temperance Building on Roane Street.

  • Lots going on at Alpha House

    Alpha House Inc., a faith-based transitional home for women leaving incarceration, had its first volunteer training in Providence House, Oak Ridge.

    Prior to the training, an architectural conceptual drawing for a permanent structure for the ministry was unveiled.

    A capital campaign to fund construction will be initiated in the near future.

    The ministry is also planning to open its “Alpha BitZ” Thrift Store on May 1 at 5110 Harriman Hwy. (Hwy. 62) in the former Morrow Furniture Store building.

  • Church Calendar: April 13-27

    SATURDAY, APRIL 13
    • Emory Gap Missionary Baptist Church, Harriman, will have a free clothing giveaway for most sizes from noon to 3 p.m. at the church at 120 Poland Drive.

    • Sevier Street Seventh-day Adventist Church’s youth concert, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed. The concert will be rescheduled in May. The church is at 950 Sevier Ave., Harriman.

  • Ava Barber to be in Kingston

    Ava Barber, a featured performer on “The Lawrence Welk Show,” will be the guest performer next week during the meeting of Kingston First Baptist Church’s Young at Heart.

    The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. April 1 in the church’s family life center at 215 N. Kentucky St.

    The program is open to the public. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert for the meal afterward.

    FRIDAY, MARCH 29
    • Swan Pond United Methodist Church, Harriman, will present its annual Good Friday “service of darkness” beginning at 6 p.m. The Rev. Brenda Poole will conduct the service. The church is at 1317 Swan Pond Road. Call Pool at 660-2102 for details.

    • Bradbury United Methodist Church, Kingston, will have a Good Friday worship service beginning at 7 p.m. “Crossings” is the message. The church is at 3506 Buttermilk Road West. Call 376-2990 for details.

  • Bethel helps others for Lenten season

    I came to Bethel Presbyterian Church as pastor nearly two years ago, in the middle of Lent.

    The church was somewhat still in transition, having just had an interim pastor, and so Lenten practices were minimal.

    Last year, we went back to previous practices of a special Lenten Bible study and Save Our Saturday mission events.

    SATURDAY, MARCH 16
    • A “Give My Regards to Broadway” concert to benefit Kingston United Methodist Church’s All God’s Children ministry will begin at 7 p.m. in the church at 202 Church St. University of Tennessee lecturer Terry Silver-Alford and Mike Adcock, church director of music ministries, will perform piano duets of their arrangements of favorite Broadway melodies. Donations will be accepted.

  • ‘Broadway’ concert boosts Kingston ministry

    “Give My Regards to Broadway,” a concert to benefit Kingston United Methodist Church’s All God’s Children ministry,  will begin at 7 p.m. in the church at 212 W. Church St.

    Donations will be accepted.

    The concert will feature University of Tennessee theater professor Terry Silver-Alford and Mike Adcock, church organist and director of music.

    Silver-Alford teaches musical theatre performance, directing, introduction to theatre and acting at UT.

    Rockwood First Presbyterian Church’s Women’s Association will have a two-day winter clearance rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the basement of the church at 429 W. Rockwood St. Proceeds will benefit church programs.
