  • Vacation Bible School 2013

    Asbury Chapel United Methodist
    Asbury Chapel United Methodist Church, Rockwood, will kick off its vacation Bible school from 5 to 6 p.m. June 23 with hot dogs and refreshments. Classes will be from 6 to 8 p.m. June 24-26 in the church at 1717 Eureka Road; “Fun Fair” Where God’s World Comes Together” is the theme.

  • Pastor becomes military chaplain on 10th anniversary of ordination

    The Rev. Jake Morrill took the oath last week that commissions him to serve as a chaplain in the Army Reserve.

    Morrill took the oath on June 9 before the congregation he serves at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

    The day was special for another reason: it was Morrill’s 10th anniversary of ordination.

    He was ordained on June 9, 2003, in his home church, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville.

    In his new role, Morrill will hold the rank of Army Reserve captain.

    “Following in Jesus’ Footsteps: Inspired by Marketplace 29 A.D.” is the theme of the Bible school planned by Bethel Presbyterian Church, Kingston, and Kingston United Methodist Church. Classes will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 17-20 in Kingston United Methodist fellowship hall at 212 W. Church St. Registration information is available at Bethel Presbyterian at 203 S.   • Crowe to speak at Little Leaf’s scholarship event

    Charles D. Crowe, co-founder of The Men of Tomorrow program, will be the guest speaker for the annual Ed Fritz scholarship program at Little Leaf Baptist Church, Oliver Springs.

    The program starts at 4 p.m. June 9.

    Crowe, CEO of LeGacy Resource Consulting Corp., helped found the Men of Tomorrow mentoring program in 1990.

    The program promotes development of a good self image, positive role model, academic achievement, career development and cultural development among youth.

  • Rockwood Wesleyan Church reunion planned this weekend

    For more than 100 years, Rockwood Wesleyan Church on South Church Avenue has played a vital role in the community and in the lives of its congregation, especially during the Great Depression, World War II and the 1950-60s.

    Congregants past and present, the public and Pastor Bob Lower will celebrate that role this weekend during special reunion events that include a Saturday hot dog roast, Sunday services and a special afternoon singing.

  • Bethel marks Hettrick’s 50 years in ministry

    Bethel Presbyterian Church, Kingston, will host a special celebration of Pastor Emeritus Dick Hettrick’s 50th anniversary of ordination on June 9.

    The special event, which will coincide with a celebration of Bethel’s role in Kingston and Roane County for the past 195 years, will be during the morning worship service at 11.

    The church is at 203 S. Kentucky St.

  • Rockwood Methodist dedicating grand piano

    Rockwood United Methodist Church will dedicate its new Yamaha grand piano June 9 with special celebrations.

    Music in the 11 a.m. worship service will feature the piano, flute and trumpet and include a recognition of contributors to the piano fund.

    A 3 p.m. concert of sacred music will show off the new piano to the community with Rockwood United Methodist Church organist Wayne Duggin on piano and guest organist Fred Pogue.

  • Rockwood letter carriers deliver to help hungry

    Letter carriers with the Rockwood Post Office collected about 5,000 pounds of food during their annual food drive earlier this month.

    Postal patrons left their donations of nonperishable foods in their mailboxes.

    The food was picked up by the letter carriers making their routes and later delivered to the Rockwood Ministerial Association’s food pantry warehouse.
