  • An upcoming eight-hour AARP smart driver class in Roane County offers area senior citizens a refresher course on driving and an update on rules of the road.

    The class will be from noon to 4 p.m. May 10-11 in Rockwood Community Center at 710 N. Chamberlain Ave.

    Course participants will be taught to adjust to age-related physical changes, reduce incident of violations and accidents, and update driving skills and rules of the road in a stress-free environment.

  • Victorian Square Assisted Living is hosting a spring fling from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7.

    A yard sale, entertainment and refreshments available for purchase are among the attractions.

    All proceeds will go toward the Resident Life Enrichment Fund, which is available to help resiwith items such as clothing, coats, haircuts or other personal care items.

    Victorian Square is at 241 S. Chamberlain Ave., Rockwood.

    In the event of inclement weather, all activities will be indoors.

    “After visiting Nice and Monaco, the newspaper stopped at the beautiful Chateau de Chenonceau,” Mona said. “Then it was on to Omaha Beach to visit the site of D-Day and the American Cemetery in Normandy. A nighttime river cruise gave them a view of the Eiffel Tower lit up at night.

  • Prices at the pump should get more expensive this week thanks to an increase in oil prices and high demand for gasoline.

    Crude oil prices rose for the third consecutive week, making the cost to produce gasoline more expensive.

    Gas prices nationwide have increased for 20 of the last 23 days, rising 16 cents to Sunday’s average of $2.20.

    “Gas prices could climb another 8-10 cents this week in response to the recent hike in oil prices,” said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman.

  • Harriman Lions Club will have its annual fundraising “World’s Greatest Pancake Breakfast” to help support its many community charities.

    The breakfast will be from 7 to 11 a.m. May 7. Rodney Harback is again providing Roane Street Grill for the event.

    Generous portions of pancakes with bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, orange juice and milk will be available for $8 for adults, $4 for ages 10 and younger.

    Harriman Lions Club has provided exams and glasses for many people over the last 60 years.
