  • The Garden Gate: Palms are the stuff of legends

    Many are the legends about palm trees.

    One says that Jesus commanded a palm tree to bend down so that He could pick dates for His mother, and that He promised in return to bless it, and that when He entered Jerusalem in triumph it would be with a palm branch in His hand as the people cried Hosannah.

    Tradition in some countries still says the palm tree — not the apple nor the fig — was the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. And a palm tree is depicted in the state seal of South Carolina.

    Under discussion at the Homecoming ‘86 meeting was the idea of planting an avenue of dogwoods or azaleas, or both, on highway medians approaching Harriman. An attractive welcome to visitors and residents, it would be a memorial to citizens of the past; an honorarium to those of the present; and a hope and legacy to those of the future.

  • Master Gardeners planning plant sale

    Roane County Master Gardeners’ sixth annual plant sale will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23 at Ladd Landing, Kingston.  

    This is a public opportunity to obtain plants, knowledge and information from volunteers trained through the Tennessee Master Gardener program of Roane County and the University of Tennessee Extension.

    Perennials, annuals, house plants, shrubs, grasses, vines, herbs, trees, vegetables and yard art will be available.

  • 'Music of the Masters' closes out season

    Roane Choral Society will present “Music of the Masters,” its final concert of the season at 3 p.m. May 1.

    The group will be accompanied by a string quartet and piano in the historic Bethel Presbyterian Church, Kingston.  

    The performance will include “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Bach, “Hallelujah” by Beethoven, “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place” by Brahms and other classics.

    There is no admission charge; however, donations will be appreciated.

    Roane County Clerk Barbara Anthony is in the midst of celebrating “Show Us Your Heart Tennessee” in April’s observance of National Donate Life Month.  

    National Donate Life Month is a time to raise public awareness about organ donation and the increasing gap between the number of people whose lives depend upon receiving a transplant and the number of available organs.

  • Denton-Carter

    Charlene and Brad Denton of Lenoir City announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Andrea Danielle Denton, to Justin Andrew Carter.

    He is the son of Donald D. Carter and Sherry B. Carter of Rockwood.

    The ceremony will be at 4 p.m. May 21 in Morrison Hill Christian Church, Kingston. A reception will follow in the Masonic Hall on Spring Street, Kingston.

    Invitations will be sent, but all relatives and friends of the couple are invited to attend.

    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Ada Jenkins.

  • Mr & Mrs. Nelson 50th

    Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nelson will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 22.

    Nelson and the former Brenda Adkisson were married on April 22, 1961, in Oliver Springs.

    He is retired from K-25 Site in Oak Ridge, and she is retired from Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge.

    The couple has a daughter, Lesa McFarland, and a son-in-law, Randy McFarland of Oak Ridge.

    There are two grandchildren, Sam and Evan McFarland.

  • Gathering to mark 90th

    William Thomas “Bill Tom” Ferguson turns 90 years old today, April 13.

    His birthday will be celebrated with a gathering at 2 p.m. April 16 at his home at 211 Ferguson Lane, Kingston.

    No invitations are being sent, but all relatives and friends — especially any World War II veterans — are invited to attend. The family requests birthday cards only.

    Ferguson grew up on a farm, and his family said he still thinks he needs to work from daylight to dark.

    He enjoys music and loves to dance.

  • Melhorn celebrates birthday

    Brenda Melhorn of Rockwood celebrated her 60th birthday on March 27 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wartburg, with more than 100 family members and friends.

    She is the daughter of the late Walter and Elsie Melhorn.

    Melhorn has Downs syndrome and lives a good life, thanks to her family and friends, and the love and kindness of friends at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Glen Alice Christian Church and Post Oak Springs Christian Church.
