    Anthony Malenovsky of Harriman was chosen as one of nine contestants for the CBS game show, “The Price is Right.” He and and his wife, Kitty, went to the taping while visiting their children in California. Although Malenovsky didn’t make it to the “Showcase Showdown,” he did win more than $3,000 in cash and prizes.

  • Christopher Matera and Lauretta “Laurie” Lee Martin Matera of Kingston had the official wedding convalidation of their marriage on March 5.

    The preparation leading up to the Materas’ Catholic convalidation was overseen by Father Michael Sweeney, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harriman. Father Leo Edgerly pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in Oakland, Calif., officiated at the ceremony.

    As spring begins, April will at last bring us warmer days, new leaves on the trees, birds and squirrels building their nests, and violets and forget-me-nots starring the new grass.

    We progress into the season of Lent and turn our thoughts toward the days of Holy Week and Easter in the Christian faith and Passover in the Jewish tradition.

    But we are also faced with some seemingly frivolous occasions in this varied month.

  • Members of the Harriman chapter of Modern Woodmen of America have honored Robert “Bob” Hembree of Rockwood through the organization’s Hometown Heroes program.

    The citation honors Hembree for countless hours of service to the community.

    Hembree was honored for volunteering with Rockwood Ministerial Association’s Food Pantry.

  • Harriman High School will host a disaster drill on April 1.

    This mock disaster will involve students from three Roane County schools: Oliver Springs High School, Roane County High School, and Harriman High School.

    The simulation will show the aftermath of a mock natural disaster, such as a tornado, an earthquake or an airplane crash.

    Many students will portray roles as injured and deceased victims.

    Student makeup artists have been trained to create faux burns, scratches, protruding objects and even brain matter.

  • With April arriving this week, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that the filing deadline for 2010 tax returns is April 18, not April 15.

    Emancipation Day is observed April 15 in Washington, D.C., so most federal offices there will be closed.

    By law, the tax filing deadline for the nation is moved to the next business day, Monday, April 18.

    IRS spokesman Dan Boone offers some tips for those who haven't filed yet:

    Jesse Porter of Midtown was the grand prize winner in the Bubblicious Instant Winner Game. By sending his name and address in on a 3-by-5 card, the Midtown Elementary School third-grader won an all-expense-paid summer vacation for four to Walt Disney World and a $1,000 check. Jesse’s mom, Betty Hamby, said she had a hard time believing it.

  • The Roane State Playmakers will perform “The Diviners” beginning April 7 in the O’Brien Theatre on Roane State Community College’s Roane County campus.

    Performances will begin at 7 p.m. April 7-9 and April 14-16. Matinees will be performed at 2 p.m. April 10 and April 17.

    Written by Jim Leonard Jr., “The Diviners” tells the story of a small farm community during the Depression where water and faith are in short supply.

  • U.S. Air Force Airman Alexander K. Turner recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

    Son of Jim and Donna Turner of Harriman, he is a 2009 graduate of Harriman High School.

    The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
