    Members of the Harriman chapter of Modern Woodmen of America have honored Robert “Bob” Hembree of Rockwood through the organization’s Hometown Heroes program.

    The citation honors Hembree for countless hours of service to the community.

    Hembree was honored for volunteering with Rockwood Ministerial Association’s Food Pantry.

  • Disaster drill planned April 1

    Harriman High School will host a disaster drill on April 1.

    This mock disaster will involve students from three Roane County schools: Oliver Springs High School, Roane County High School, and Harriman High School.

    The simulation will show the aftermath of a mock natural disaster, such as a tornado, an earthquake or an airplane crash.

    Many students will portray roles as injured and deceased victims.

    Student makeup artists have been trained to create faux burns, scratches, protruding objects and even brain matter.

  • Time to get serious about filing income taxes for '10

    With April arriving this week, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that the filing deadline for 2010 tax returns is April 18, not April 15.

    Emancipation Day is observed April 15 in Washington, D.C., so most federal offices there will be closed.

    By law, the tax filing deadline for the nation is moved to the next business day, Monday, April 18.

    IRS spokesman Dan Boone offers some tips for those who haven't filed yet:

  • Look Back: A Little Something From Our Files From the Week of March 30

    25 Years Ago
    Jesse Porter of Midtown was the grand prize winner in the Bubblicious Instant Winner Game. By sending his name and address in on a 3-by-5 card, the Midtown Elementary School third-grader won an all-expense-paid summer vacation for four to Walt Disney World and a $1,000 check. Jesse’s mom, Betty Hamby, said she had a hard time believing it.

  • ‘The Diviners’ opens April 7 at Roane State

    The Roane State Playmakers will perform “The Diviners” beginning April 7 in the O’Brien Theatre on Roane State Community College’s Roane County campus.

    Performances will begin at 7 p.m. April 7-9 and April 14-16. Matinees will be performed at 2 p.m. April 10 and April 17.

    Written by Jim Leonard Jr., “The Diviners” tells the story of a small farm community during the Depression where water and faith are in short supply.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Alexander K. Turner

    U.S. Air Force Airman Alexander K. Turner recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

    Son of Jim and Donna Turner of Harriman, he is a 2009 graduate of Harriman High School.

    The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Jesse D. Isham

    U.S. Army Spec. Jesse D. Isham was recently recognized for his efforts at the Ammunition Supply Point as well as his position at the Camp Cole Entry Control Point.

    Isham, a transportation specialist with two years of military service, is assigned to Task Force Destiny, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan.  

    Isham is the son of Danny W. Isham of Rockwood and Loretta Isham of Westel.

    The specialist graduated in 2006 from Rockwood High School.

  • Mr & Mrs. Charles 50th

    Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Charles will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 1.

    They will celebrate with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. April 10 in Lakeview Baptist Church fellowship building, Harriman.

    Charles and the former Carolyn Courtney were married on April 1, 1961, in Harriman, with the Rev. H.M. James officiating.

    Maggie Rose Richardson celebrated her third birthday on March 8 with a Cinderella Princess-themed party with relatives and friends.

    She is the daughter of Cliff and Shauna Richardson of North Carolina.

    Grandparents are Jack and Diane Woolum of Kingston, Jerry Richardson of New York and Michael and Kay Griffith of Mount Airy, N.C.

    Great-grandparents are Anita Mosley of North Carolina, the late J.D. and Mabel Waldrop, and the late Otis and Bessie Richardson.
